Beyonce and Jay-Z Want to Trademark Daughter's Name: Smart or Silly?

Perhaps prompted by reports of a popular marijuana strain named after their daughter, Beyonce and Jay-Z have filed to patent the name of their first child, Blue Ivy. According to The Washington Post, they not only want to protect the name from being used to someone else's profit, but also to secure it for entrepreneurial use, should they decide to use it "for a future line of baby carriages, baby cosmetics, [and] diaper bags."

A few people have already tried to patent the name -- last month, a fashion designer filed for "Blue Ivy Carter NYC" and a fragrance line filed for "Blue Ivy Carter Glory IV" -- but both requests were denied because the name clearly belong to "a very famous infant." However, a Wisconsin boutique filed for "Blue Ivy" more than a year ago, and they will be keeping their trademark as it received approval before the child's name was even announced -- unless, as The Washington Post notes, they feel like selling it. Do you think Beyonce and Jay-Z's plan to trademark Blue Ivy's name is smart -- or downright silly?

At this point it makes me think that they're not only exploiting their kid but they've used her as a marketing strategy. Honestly I didn't like their latest albums and I guess they just needed something to get them back in the spotlight.

But here's the good news! I've found their logo
    blue marijuana

It is rediculous that they feel they are so important that they need to corner their childs name. They are going way overboard and need to slow down;both Jay-Z and Beyonce!

If they had named the child a decent, non manufactured Hollywood name, this foolishness would not be required.

Why not just patent every combination of words in the world. There are certain to be other Blue Ivys such as plants and restaurants, etc.

It's smart that they want to trademark the name so that the name doesn't become associated with sleazy enterprises.
That being said, that does not mean I like how they set this child up to be a brand in the first place by giving her a name that will resonate around the hood.

I can't fault them when they didn't sell their baby reveal to a glossy mag for millions, but posted some fairly sweet and intimate photos online instead.

Okay, it's not like they're patenting the name "Melissa Elizabeth" or something really common. If this protects their daughters' name from winding up on every sort of product imaginable (I could see makeup companies' taking advantage of it), good for them!

We get more childish by the minute. The baby can't even say the word entrepeneur, yet they 've got money plans or plans to use the baby to make money already. It's a name and only a name. Unfortuntely even if patented people will name their children the same name anyway. How many babies are named Alesae. Silly isn't it?.

Naming their child Blue Ivy in the first place was silly, but at least trademarking it will help do a little damage control, the kid will appreciate it when they're older.....how they feel about being named Blue Ivy Carter however will be a very different story.

    This just....

....this just makes me sad. Very very sad.

    sad sad

They should be more concerned about taking care of the child instead of the ways they can make a profit off their NEWBORN baby.

    GAH! Their egos are astronomical.
