Baseball: Has AJ Burnett forgot how to beat Boston or is it between the ears?
The Sick "Libtard" Yankee 2011/06/08 06:05:43
Part of the reason why the Yankees overpaid AJ Burnett to a 5 year 82.5 million dollar contract was because of his excellent track record against the rival Boston Red Sox during his tenure with the Blue Jays. So far this hasn't been the case in pinstripes. In 8 starts against Boston with Toronto Burnett went 5-0 with a 2.56 ERA and managed to log at least 7 innings in 6 of the 8 starts. As a Yankee though... no way to sugar coat it his numbers against boston are bad. Since joining the Yanks AJ is 0-3 with a 8.33 ERA in seven starts against the Sox and only managed to pitch more than six innings just once. As bad as those numbers seem... they seem even worse when paired with other Yankees first 7 starts against Boston. Randy Johnson went 5-1 his first seven starts and people complained about him. CC Sabathia... who usually took his lumps against the Red Sox while a member of the Cleveland Indians has won 4 games against them already. David Cone, Roger Clemens and Mike Mussina all put up sub 3.20 ERAs.Even Javier Vazquez and Kei Igawa have wins against the Red Sox... AJ does not. So what the hell happened? Did the Red Sox finally catch up with him over the years? Is he not as nasty? Or is the whole rivalry going to his head? Whatever the case may be the Yankees need him to be that Red Sox killer he once was in order to compete with Boston. Freddy Garcia doesn't have the stuff to dominate Boston, but AJ Burnett does. Your thoughts.
