Bane From 'The Dark Knight Rises': Does He Hold a Deep Political Message?

All sorts of crazy theories are flying around this week about the villain in the latest Batman movie, Bane from “The Dark Knight Rises.” First, Rush Limbaugh alleged that director Christopher Nolan chose the evil genius with venomous veins, Bane, as a metaphor for Mitt Romney’s company Bain Capital. Rush has since denied that he was accusing the Batman gang of some decades-old comic conspiracy, but the backlash has hit hard for the radio host.

Bane from The Dark Knight Rises

And Rush isn’t the only one throwing around conspiracy theories. Occupy Wall Street protester Harrison Schultz wrote an op-ed for the Daily Beast comparing Bane’s Revolution to the Occupy Movement. Of course, this film has been in the works for years, long before anyone occupied anything. And Bane has been a villain in the comic series since the mid-nineties, just as Mitt was entering the political arena and more than a decade before he had presidential aspirations.

So if Nolan and his co-writers had some big political conspiracy in mind, they must have had a clairvoyant on their team. Nolan told ABC News, “We try to be sincere about writing situations that would frighten us, that would concern us, things that I suppose we absorb from the world around us. We never want to be overtly political in any sense.” So what do you think: Does Bane hold a deep political message?

This villain has been around for quite a while, no need to plot a conspiracy over the fact that there is a character from 1993 who's name resembles the Company run by a current presidential candidate over a decade later.

The creators themselves stated that there's no comparison here & that as staunch conservatives they would say Bane is more like the occupy movement and if they had to make a comparison for Romney he would be more like Bruce Wayne/Batmam! So no there's no intentional political message only that with the timing of the release and the social conflicts of today comparisons are easy to make.

Only a tea bagging foxtard of an idiot would believe that there is a connection. The Bane character was created in 1993 and was published in the Batman comics by DC Comics.

Chuck, Those are the same tea bagging foxtards who believe the President somehow retroactively planted a phony birth announcement in Hawaii and is secretly working for the Muslim Brotherhood. They may be beyond redemption. There is no cure for stupid.

But it has nothing to do with Bain Capital. Every good vs evil story has its own background history and statement.

Perhaps if you think there is a connection then there is some truth to the character and Bain Capital. Bottom line the Bane character was created in 1993.

No! Bane is one of the coolest of batmans enemies from the comics! More people need to read comics about these superheros before they watch the movies and mix stuff up...

Bane has been a character in the Batman comics since 1993! This will only erode Rush's already shrinking credibility.

He is such a fool. Why does anyone listen to this drug addict idiot? He is always wrong. Bane has nothing to do with Bain capitol. The character was made over 20 years ago in the comic strip. Bain Capitol is real and has done a lot of damage for real to people and their jobs.

but only in a sub-paralleled sense, the villain has been around for some time, but this take of him is different. (I saw the movie last night) i wont spoil it, but he is deferentially more intelligent than the past incarnations of him in movies, television, and cartoons.

As far as I can see it, Bane represents the Occupy wall street movement, and other left-wing nut jobs, and Batman represents the Tea party movement, and other Conservative and Libertarians. Hooray for use Right-wingers.
  • Luis Barry C... 2012/07/20 17:42:09

Conservatives are not Libertarians. They are generally Conservative authoritarians. The Tea party started as a movement against taxes but it is entirely funded by the Koch brothers. Dave an Charles Koch don't want to pay taxes because they think they are above everyone. They are the third richest men in the world. Behind Gates and Buffet. The are in the oil business and other multi-international conglomerates.

Koch brothers may have hi-jacked the movement, but they did not found it. Chap Peace and a business founder set up the first Tea Party website.

When dealing with people of reasonable intelligence I would say you are right . However, Many on the far right simple logic and reasoning is irrelevant and facts only stand in the way from their point of view. These people will censor themselves from hearing the truth.

I just used this place to show and express how ridiculous they really are.

    1) Rush Limbugh is not watched, he is listened to - it is a radio show;
    2) you have as much an idea as to my intelligence or political belief as I have
    of yours
    3) to most of the left simple logic and reasoning is irrelevant and facts only
stand in the way from their point of view. These people will believe only
what their party leaders tell them to believe - this is an example, simple
    economics is another.

Though I am not far right, I am very conservative in my views, such as being polite even to those that are not. I know people on all sides of the political spectrum, and it seems they were never taught, don't care they were taught, or forgot to use manners. Point: Watch any media commercial/political advert... attack ads, ad hominem maximus.

And Rush is by far the only one who wondered if the Hollyweird dick-heads were plying their typical political games since the vast majority of their 'work' has had a bent for decades.

I don't care when this character was created but it does make one wonder why it was chosen out of the thousands of other villains in the make believe world.

Bane -- the bane of existence, my bane, etc. Bain -- while a similar activity list to Bane (perhaps), not a play on words, just the name of the company (unless its founders WANTED to relate their company to being the Bane of something - American workers? Industrial production in the US? American nationalism? Something like that - and that is a disturbing thought I hadn't had before, I must admit. Does anyone know what Bain actually stood for? Because honestly, the use of Bane in the sense I just described is far, far older than Batman, or Bain Capital.)

    Kind thoughts,

    Reyn

I heard Rush Limbaugh say this was some type of subliminal message about Bain capital. I agree these type of messages are there, but if you know about them the conscious mind can overcome the subconscious.
