Bane From 'The Dark Knight Rises': Does He Hold a Deep Political Message?

All sorts of crazy theories are flying around this week about the villain in the latest Batman movie, Bane from “The Dark Knight Rises.” First, Rush Limbaugh alleged that director Christopher Nolan chose the evil genius with venomous veins, Bane, as a metaphor for Mitt Romney’s company Bain Capital. Rush has since denied that he was accusing the Batman gang of some decades-old comic conspiracy, but the backlash has hit hard for the radio host.

Bane from The Dark Knight Rises

And Rush isn’t the only one throwing around conspiracy theories. Occupy Wall Street protester Harrison Schultz wrote an op-ed for the Daily Beast comparing Bane’s Revolution to the Occupy Movement. Of course, this film has been in the works for years, long before anyone occupied anything. And Bane has been a villain in the comic series since the mid-nineties, just as Mitt was entering the political arena and more than a decade before he had presidential aspirations.

So if Nolan and his co-writers had some big political conspiracy in mind, they must have had a clairvoyant on their team. Nolan told ABC News, “We try to be sincere about writing situations that would frighten us, that would concern us, things that I suppose we absorb from the world around us. We never want to be overtly political in any sense.” So what do you think: Does Bane hold a deep political message?

This villain has been around for quite a while, no need to plot a conspiracy over the fact that there is a character from 1993 who's name resembles the Company run by a current presidential candidate over a decade later.

Bain Capital is a company that specialized in taking over and dismantling businesses.

Bane is an anarchist who tried to blow up Gotham City.

    I don't see the connection.

Well, he does actually, many people have said that the Batman films have contained at least some element of political commentary (though you'd have to go out of your way to look for it)

The important thing to note is he's note there in the political role that Rush thinks he is.

"Have you heard this new movie, the Batman movie, what is it, The Dark Knight Lights Up or whatever the name is. That's right, Dark Knight Rises. Lights Up, same thing. Do you know the name of the villain in this movie? Bane. The villain in The Dark Knight Rises is named Bane, B-a-n-e. What is the name of the venture capital firm that Romney ran and around which there's now this make-believe controversy? Bain. The movie has been in the works for a long time. The release date's been known, summer 2012 for a long time. Do you think that it is accidental that the name of the really vicious fire-breathing four eyed whatever it is villain in this movie is named Bane?"

    - Rush Limbaugh.

Is this guy in a cave or something? Apparently women wanting birth control are whores and he's trying to act like he hasn't heard of the Batman movie's proper title, and is also blatantly trying to ignore the fact Bane was featured in another motion picture as well. What a crock.

Bane has been a major villain since 1993....

And TDKR has been in development since before romney started campaigning

Therefore: Rush Limbaugh is a complete idiot who tries to make everything a conspiracy theory

You know the best Arguement against socialism?
    The Republican working class.

Today most of you guys will end up, homeless and be convinced its all YOUR Fault because your not good enough. You will just suck it in wandering in the cold and rains, abused ignored or insulted, sleeping on sidewalks and costing the rest of us little.

In a socialist system these people would be retrained and given employment, in expanded services for the public, if not needed for production, even though that costs tax money.

I think Hollywood is using it for that purpose... But the one thing I want to point out is... BAIN CAPITAL IS NOT MITT ROMNEY'S COMPANY.... HE WORKED FOR THE COMPANY... whether it was 4 yrs or 6. he does not own the company.

It is clearly that Batman came from a DC/Marvel comic, which is a fantasy made up story. Christopher Nolan makes the Batman Saga look like our modern world with a little wink to our today society, which might confuse people and conspiracy theorists a little bit. For instance in ''Batman Begins'' Gotham City is posted as a society who is running on his last leg, which could be linked to todays financial crisis.

I get why people would link Bane to the Occupy Movement we recently had worldwide, but like all conspiracy theories, it all sounds a little too Farfetched (no Pokemon) to me. Thats why I am not really down with conspiracy theories and such.

People told me to watch Zeitgeist 1 and 2 and that it will change my vision on modern day life. I haven't found the time yet to watch the movies, but I surely can't wait to see them now. But first up; ''The Dark Knight Rises'' is hitting theatres now, and I can't wait to catch that flick either

Rush may have put it out there, but leave it to the liberal media to report the stupid headlines that have no meaning. And for anyone to believe any of it, is a moron......PERIOD!!!!

that the liberal media said he was from the Tea Party. There isn't ANY evidence so far of that. This movie was in the works for years and long before any Republican had decided to run for President. People in the liberal news media just want to blame a conservative or a Republican, it is that simple. They were quick to judge what happened in Arizona with Gabby Giffords....................and saying it was a Tea Party member. There is always a rush to judgment that is the way the 24/7 news cycle operates. ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, are the lame stream media and ABC was the one to put it out there. Rush made a comment, and surely any sane person would know that he was just kidding. ABC made the judgment, not a comment. There is a difference any sane person would know that. I am not a Rush fan, but at least I know the difference.
  • Cordingly Paige 2012/07/23 17:06:23

Ummm... Who's saying Bane is a member of the Tea Party?
  • Paige Cordingly 2012/07/23 23:32:06
    Paige
I didn't say Bane was a member of the Tea Party....read the comment again.........ABC tried to say that the shooter was a member of the Tea Party. They tried to lay blame on a member of the Tea Party without checking it out. They should have kept their opinions and their mouths shut before reporting a false statement. That is the liberal media and what they do...........anything to discredit conservatives.

I find it encouraging. I would like to thank Mr. Limbaugh for pushing his limits, and becoming even more brainless.

And it's a wise strategy. The Zombie Apocalypse is starting. But the Zombies won't attack Rush; he has no brains for them to feed on.

    Bane... is a noun.

    Bain... is a corporation.

Pain... is what we will all feel, if either of these Big government, corporatism/cronyism flip-floppers become president.

That would be a bane on all of our existence!

It's idiotic. There's no connection between the 2. They're even spelled differently. It's a weird coincidence that Romney's Bain Capital problems are reaching a boil in the media just when 'Dark Knight Rises' , featuring a villian whose name sounds the same as 'Bain', is released, but it's nothing more than that. It couldn't be ANYTHING else as the character was created 20 years ago!!

No, but I can see it slanted that way. It all depends on the insinuations and spin put on the Bane character by politically motivated individuals and corporations. If it is spun that way, and if sheeple believe it... then it holds a political message. I think the Matrix held a Messianic slant, though the Wychowski brothers (who sto... er... borrowed Matrix I, II, III from Sophia Stewart) say not.
