The National Football League annually presents preseason games every summer to allow teams to set their final rosters and see who is ready for September. Unfortunately, there are some drawbacks to the preseason. For starters, they are essentially exhibition games. On top of that, there is still a great risk of injury or in lesser cases--extreme overhype.
Tim Tebow recently made his New York Jets debut and underwhelmed, while the man that took his spot in Denver, Peyton Manning, took the live field for the first time with the Broncos. Manning's performance was really no different from Tebow's, but analysts and observers talked about him getting back on track, as opposed to being average in the game.
The bottom line is preseason football can tell coaches and observers a lot about a team before the regular season rolls around, but it can also be deceiving--especially when players are usually going half-speed to avoid serious injuries. Just ask fantasy players. Overall, whether appealing or not to most fans, the NFL preseason does serve its purpose and get teams prepared for their regular season run.
