Are you looking for a way to discuss important safety topics with children?
This is a little long BUT Very Important!
My Book is really neither! it is Important!
Please take the time to read especially IF you have Children in your life!!!
I truly have a way to help you discuss "scary stuff" with kids!
The statistics regarding children's safety today are astounding!
One of the unfortunate experiences that marks many childhoods is
bullying. According to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent
Psychiatry, close to half of all children will experience school bullying
at some point while they are at primary or secondary school. At least
10 percent of children are bullied regularly. Child bullying is
a serious problem in schools around the country, and it can be very
harmful, long term, to children. Child bullying teaches them to take a
certain view of what is normal in relationships with other people, and
it can also damage their own self-image in ways that can affect them for
life. Children who are bullied can be stunted emotionally and socially,
as well as see their schoolwork suffer. In some cases, serious
depression and attempted suicide can result from childhood bulliing.

Kidnapping Statistics
Every 40 seconds in the United States, a child is
reported missing or abducted. That translates to over 2,000 children per day
(under 18 years of age) or 800,000 per year.
The rate of reported missing children in the United
States is 11.4 per 1,000 (Department of Justice, Office of Juvenile Justice and
Delinquency Prevention, National Incidence Studies of Missing, Abducted,
Runaway, and Thrownaway Children, October 2002; National Crime Information
Center)
Of the 800,000 children reported missing annually,
approximately 69,000 are abducted:
* Family
members account for the majority of these reported cases (82 percent)
* Non-family
abductions account for 12,000 of these reported cases (18 percent)
* Of non-family
abductions, 37 percent are by a stranger
(Department of Justice, Office of Juvenile Justice and
Delinquency Prevention, National Incidence Studies of Missing, Abducted,
Runaway, and Thrownaway Children, October 2002)
More than 1.3 million cases of caretaker-reported missing
children incidents occur annually (18.8 per 1,000 children) (Department of
Justice, Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, National
Incidence Studies of Missing, Abducted, Runaway, and Thrownaway Children,
October 2002)
Of child victims of "stereotypical kidnappings,
"40 percent are killed, 4 percent are never found, 71 percent are by a
stranger and 29 percent are by a slight acquaintance." In 1999 there were
over 115 "stereotypical kidnappings" of children in the United States
(Department of Justice, Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention,
National Incidence Studies of Missing, Abducted, Runaway, and Thrownaway
Children, October 2002) and look how old these stats are...
-------------------------------------------------------------...
I have always been a child advocate but I was haunted by the movie "Look" in which there is an unsolved child abduction. Yet surprisingly even the reviews for this movie omit the scenes of the child abduction-there is no mention of that part of the movie?
"Look is a 2007 film by Adam Rifkin. The film is composed entirely of material shot from the perspective of surveillance cameras:[1] though the makers used CineAlta[2] The scenes are staged, though, with actors playing a given script.[2]movie cameras, all were placed in locations where actual surveillance cameras were mounted."
Yet, for me -it is this movie and the child abduction which haunted me for days and days...
One night I awoke with an idea, I got up and wrote it down. A simple idea for a special character in a book who finds a way for children to-perhaps- be much safer with the use of a simple gadget.
The next day I wrote "Miss Flutterby Say's "Don't Bug Me!" in only seven hours!!
Then I set out to illustrate too! Having Never drawn a thing in my life! I just knew it had to appeal to the kids!
I just sat at the computer and pounded out the words as they flowed "Through" me. Yes, I said through me. I am Not a religious fruitcake, but I have to tell you this story is divinely inspired if not then where did it come from? I am not a writer, I never aspired to be a writer. This story just came!
I hate to sound egotistical, but I have to tell you this Book is Special. This Book is important. In fact this idea has now inspired a whole series of books! Every person who has read this book agrees Miss Flutterby has a special way with children. I even think a national campaign with (ladies dressed up) Miss Flutterby's going to schools and reading this book with kids would surely bring a lot of child abuse to a halt!
And how else does an everyday person let folks know that there is a great new product! I just don't have the bucks for a commercial!
This is a serious Book in which I advise Parental Participation! Parents must help children be aware of the very "grown up" danger in a child's world. Tough topics such as child abduction, bulling, child molestation, and a couple of lighter topics such as why manners are important...With the "help" of Miss Flutterby these topics are easily broached with very little fear. Children love Miss Flutterby!
There is also a need to instill confidence in our children. So they can learn to trust "their own gut" in knowing right from wrong or when "something doesn't feel right". Many of the tools that were handed down by parents have been lost in today's hectic world of both parents working. This is the perfect "job" for Miss Flutterby!
Just one look and you are sure to love Miss Flutterby!
