David Bowie celebrated his 66th birthday this morning with a surprise for everyone else: he broke a long musical silence with the new single "Where Are We Now?" from a forthcoming album, The Next Day, which is due in March.

Artists that have come back and recorded something now-a-days tend to do nowhere near as well as they did during their glory days, which is a saddening thought, but I hope Bowie can break that tradition. I'd love to see what else he has to release.
to produce occasional new albums, and / or still go on occasional tours.

He does a fair bit to support emerging artists, maybe as a consolation to having nothing epic left to give.
