I would say country crossover, or maybe southern fried rock.

I know these guys pretty well from their days in Topanga. They started in the Linda Ronstadt, Jackson Brown Venice-Topanga nexus, taking over from the Stone Ponies after Linda's Third album as her backing band. They played mostly soft folk-rock with a country sensibility pleasing to the mind-alot like Jackson. As they began to gell they added James Gang anti-blues guitarist Joe Walsh for an edge and took off: "Hotel California" and "Life in the Fast Lane" generally regarded as being their peak offering, combining florid interiorized lyrics with a gunplay-style multi-level guitar arrangemnt reminiscent of the Buffalo Springfield . But I usually point to "Desperado" from their earlier work as being equally epic but more cerebral, true to their Manifest destiny and "in" with the scene what brung 'em.Which was an emotional, love-strewn cupola of western men and women at the edge of civilized conduct engaged-as the Fleetwood Mac cast later enjoyed- in revolving entaglements of hard loving lonely men and beautiful women using all kinds of accessories only to find waiting an empty hiway leading out of town with the roads' end leading into the bush just a few miles outside of Barstow.

Eagles are best know for their soft rock songs. Country is continually evolving and so are the other genres. They have a tendency to bleed together overtime when the genres are close.

They are not country and have never been, the closest they came was in their first 2 years, and even then it was more of a cross between folk music and rock. Their fame comes solely from the rock n roll community. They are recognized by the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame and Rolling Stones Magazine both Icons of rock music. They have no such recognition in Country music.

Their songs influenced Kid Rock who actually did play country, rock, and rap....sometimes all in the same song!

    then country stole it back

I think mostly country. I don't remember anything they did that would have been classified as rock and roll, but then that's been a few years ago. To me, their best stuff sounded country or maybe crossover. I don't claim to be any kind of expert.

Initially a rock n roll band, simply because of the time that's past since their debut they are now in the ''classic rock'' category...

I always thought of them as classic rock....back in the day die hard country fans would have listed them as hard rock. Today's country music is very different from what my Grandmother listen to.

It depends on which period you're listening to. Their earlier stuff was a bit softer and more country. The later stuff had an edgier Rock sound. If I've got my chronology right.

There used to be a music category called 'country rock" and that's where you'd always find the Eagles records...."crossover" was another term some stores used in order to place their records, as well as similar groups, to sell

They are traditionally Rock & Roll, but I call then soft rock. I think some of their music could pass for contemporary country. I don't like labels.

started out country "Desperado" then got more rock "Hotel California" especially when Joe Walsh joined on guitar. I haven't kept up with their reunion tours and newer music so I don't know what they sound like now.

I used to like them. They had a special farewell tour that aired live on tv. I ended up purchasing the dvd and watching the other special from a few years back. Joe Walsh and Don Henley were my favorite out of the band. I also liked a few songs from their solo career or other band before they were part of the "Eagles". Still like them but not as much.

I consider them to be rock and roll.
