Are Supermodels Hotter Now or Then?

Looking at Heidi Klum now, it's hard to believe she's going to be 40 next year. The German supermodel turned 39 on Friday, and she's still in great shape. It's been just over 20 years since she won a modeling contest and $300,000 deal with Metropolitan Models New York, and now she's the host of "Project Runway," one of the most prestigious modeling competitions in America. But we wanted to know what the public thinks about today's supermodels. Are they as hot as they were in Heidi's days?

In the mid-1990s, when Heidi Klum was hitting the runway the hardest, she was sharing the stage with names like Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss, Tyra Banks, and Claudia Schiffer. Before that we had Brooke Shields, Iman, Elle Macpherson, Heather Lockear -- the list goes on. Today's supermodels include Gisele Bundchen, Miranda Kerr, Coco Rocha, Chanel Iman, and Izabel Goulart, but there are so many names out there now that it's tough to tack "super-" onto any of them.

There should be something in between here... Because it is a sign of the times kind of thing when u compare decades of then and now.. Where they hot then OH hell yeah, are they hot now, Oh HELL Yeah.. Every decade will have there so called hottest supermodels, and every decade that definition of what is hot and what is not will ultimately change maybe a little maybe a lot, but it will change..

Just don't like the look of the anorexic new models. They look drugged and some of them look like they are on death's door step. Christie Brinkley

The 90s were pretty good, Girls had gotten over the hairspray hairdos and makeup was used lightly, no dark eyeliner yet. Bright colors and cute dresses were in.
And yeah, like everyone else is saying, pre-1980 was nice too.

Any time other than the Twiggy/heroin chic times.

These chicks were pretty awesome, too.

The 90's! People, people...Marilyn Monroe and the other vixens from the 40's 50's and 60's were NOT Supermodels, they were PINUP models! There's a difference. Super Models are fashion models. Get it straight.

So yes , the hottest super models were from the 90's , Cindy Crawford and Naomi Campbell come from mind.

A supermodel is a fashion model that becomes a household name-instantly recognizable, and they make a lot of money :D

I must not find supermodels attractive then... hm oh well. Well maybe Tyra Banks looks wise, she is nice and curvy, a little looney though. The rest, meh. Glorified coat hangers, literally.

Tyra Banks has a nice body, I concur. Actually, the big names of the 90's, especially Cindy was actually quite curvy for fashion models. Ahhh, but yes, that's what a fashion model is. To show off the fashion. XD Where people thought that was the epitome of beauty is another thing entirely @_@ Rather, runway models.

It depends actually. I don't think Heidi Klum is as pretty as Frida Gustavsson, but I do think Twiggy is way more attractive than Daphne Groeneveld. See for yourself:

Wrong. Nobody started the 'anorexia' thing. Anorexia is a MENTAL condition. Not everybody who is thin has it.

Actually Twiggy did start a trend when she came around where many young girls began to starve themselves because they wanted to look like her. I didn't claim she was anorexic, I said that she STARTED the trend to become extremely thin during her era. Not to say anorexia didn't exist before her but her appearance glamorized and caused many women to become anorexic and the societal concept of curvy beauty was slowly replaced by extreme thinness. It's a psychological illness that causes someone to want to be as thin as women who are constantly being praised for being so thin, wanting control of their lives, punishing themselves for being "unworthy" of self love and always seeing themselves as over weight and repulsive as "fat" is considered a trait associated with very bad virtues while being thin is considered as being hard working, beautiful, successful, admired, etc within our delusional culture. Why don't you read about what trends started when Twiggy came around and how many girls started copying her by starving themselves (just as they do today with all these super skinny models) and read a little more about anorexia itself and go look at all those pro-ana sites that have pictures of women who look like Twiggy for inspiration to continue their strive for "perfection". It sounds like you know nothing about anorexia to be honest with you other than it being a "MENTAL condition". Before trying to educate someone else why not start with educating yourself first?

Maybe Twiggy started a "trend", but it wasn't the first time that trend was popular. Think about the twenties when the boyish was popular.

Uhhh, yeah, Anorexia and any other eating disorder IS A MENTAL CONDITION. There are physical symptoms, but no, it starts in the mind first. There are overweight girls who are anorexic and bulimic, and you would have never guessed it.

If you think that Anorexia is merely about being sicky thin and getting there, you are wrong and should do your research.

Anorexia is about a power struggle between yourself and your life. Everything seems out of control, and the only thing that helps is controlling your weight, what you eat. The self loathing kicks in, etc

While yes, some girls MAY be triggered into anorexia by thin models, there are many cases in which that had nothing to do with it. Abuse and unhappy family lives is more the culprit.

"Pro Ana" is run by girls who desperately WANT to be Anorexic, but often times aren't actually.

She wasn't anorexic herself though. She got that name cause she was so skinny, which back in the day wasn't the thing people strive for.

No but many girls started starving themselves trying to look like her and slowly the whole concept of curvy, healthy beauty started to erode away.

I don't think Twiggy is ugly. I think she has gorgeous eyes and her bone structure is beautiful. And I agree with Doll Princess. Just because you are envious about a skinny model and want to be skinny doesn't mean that you are doomed to be anorexic or bulimic. Eating disorders are mental diseases that control your mind. Watch an interview with an anorexic person. They will probably say that there was a voice inside them that told them not to eat, that they WANTED to eat but the voice tortured them and told them not to. And Twiggy did NOT start that trend. You know in "Gone With The Wind" when they are all comparing and measuring their waists? And in the Roaring 20's every woman wanted to be flat chested with skinny legs? Anorexia starts because of low self-esteem. Usually girls who strive to be perfect in school, work, life, socially, etc. When they realise that perfection does not exist, instead of admitting it and start to enjoy life, they start to lose weight so they can achieve perfection in at least one thing. But starving becomes an habit and their mind distorts images and convinces them that they are ugly and need to lose more weight. So they keep doing that and it will continue unless treated by a doctor. It is a terrible, terrible disease. You don't have control of yourself anymore and you feel worthless. Nobody knows what triggers anorexia, what makes it happen. It is a mystery yet to be solved and people are pointing fingers at everything. Models, designers, the media, movies, Twiggy... Anorexia is much deeper than that. We don't know what is the exact thing that causes anorexia and we don't know how to prevent it. Anorexia is a disease, not a fashion statement.

People keep bringing up Marilyn Monroe, she was chubby - a size 6 or 8 by today's standards (16 then) which is fine, but not a supermodel size. I think they're gorgeous today, at least as far as body figure goes.

Her waist was fine, 37-23-36 (Studio’s Claim), but her measurements are large.
    I'm 32-22-34, 5'9, 136lb and am big. She was a 5 or 6 by today's standards and that's quite chubby.

Uhhh, I don't know what universe you're living in, but 32-22-34 is NOT chubby by any means. Maybe you have flesh hanging off anywhere else, but that's not chubby.

    FYI, I am 34-24-35 and wear a size 4..supposedly. That's not chubby...XD

    Mes

Do you have an eating disorder or something? Because being 5'9 and 130 something is quite healthy, especially with those measurements. 5 or 6 is not huge , hell, even an 8 is normal O.o

Well, certainly not by current standards, but saying she was "large" is still inaccurate, she was just very curvy. Again her measurements don't lie.

That's the point that I am trying to drive home- That it's not the same thing. Curvy is all about proportions and having "curves" I may have self-image issues, but I am still 'slender' and 'curvy' . I stand 5'7 , weigh 114, and have measurements of 32-24-35. Would you call that big? No, it's not.

I personally don't think the hourglass shape or curves are good looking, she was a 5 or 6 by today's standards and that is big.

The models aren't anorexic so much as slimmer. Her measurements may have been okay, just a bit big, with her bust, waist, and hips, but she was a larger woman - size 5 or 6 today.
