Are Girl Gamers Underestimated?

E3 wrapped up last weekend, and it wasn't long before actress and Ubisoft host Aisha Taylor was inundated with hate mail accusing her of not being a real gamer. She fired back on Facebook, arguing that she has been a gamer all her life, and could probably beat a lot of the offending guys on Halo. This week, Kotaku writer Katie Williams expressed similar frustrations with her time at E3.

In an opinion article titled "So What If I'm A Woman? Let Me Play The Damn Game," Williams recalls how she was "guided towards the Facebook games," and walked through the simplest first-person shooter mechanics as if she couldn't possibly have a clue how to work them. She calls the experience a "hurtful underestimation of my capabilities, both as a journalist and as a gamer." Do you think girl gamers are underestimated, or did Taylor and Williams just have some bad experiences?

I and my boyfriend have both been gamers for years. When we go out together other guys will come up to him and comment on his gaming t-shirts that he wears and start talking about the game but if I dare to make a comment or try to join in the conversation even though it may be about a game I've totally rocked in the past or am currently playing I am either completely ignored or they get this shocked expression on their faces. Why? Girls are just as into gaming as guys are and sometimes twice as good at it!

Some of my best friends on Xbox Live are girls. Some of them will totally kick your ass, too. One of them rocked the entire enemy team once in a game of Guardian in Gears of War 2!

Girl gamers are definitely underestimated by most of the gaming community and they shouldn't because I have personally played with some gamer girls who were dam good

I never really thought about it, but they do. I have nothing against girl gamers myself.

I'm kind of used to it, though. My sister and I grew up playing SNES, PS1, and Dreamcast together, so I never really considered people who were anti-girl gamer because it was a common thing for girls to play video games. (My sister was always better than me, I admit. I've had to use video games to build up my fine motor skills and I'm two years younger than her, so I'm making excuses here.)

I've also dated girls who played video games, so again...I'm used to it.

Although I admit, I underestimate girl gamers as well, I feel I've never met a girl who was really good at games, nothing against any girl gamers out there, I'd love the chance to have one prove me wrong... but so far no dice :P

I thought this topic initially referring to women "players".

As in women who behave like guys, and aggressively play the sexual field, and use guys the same way those kind of guys use women. Which would be a much more interesting topic.

Andswering the qestion: Yeah, as in many other arenas, women are underestimated in their gaming ability.

You need to team up with adults. I'm serious. Anyone I team with is always around their 30's or higher and when we get a female who wants to join in rarely does anyone make a big deal out of it because most of us are already married and have kids.

Now I voted yes because most people who play games are not adults or in any way mature. When I play with random people who are in their teens or early 20's and a woman shows up it can get so bad that I'm embarrassed to be seen being grouped with them.

I've been playing video games since I was 10. I thought the sexism was bad in the 80's, it's nothing like it is today.

I was going to leave a long winded comment but gave up, females are generally not as into it, but when they are they have potential.

Almost 50 percent of gamers are women. Go back to your boys only clubhouse, and stay there alone and silent. Nobody wants to hear your misogyny.

i dont care so much about being 'underestimated' so much as the haters out there who make gaming difficult due to their own childishness and stupidity. i have skills, and i can prove it. not as good as some, but i dont suck ass either.

If you got beat by a girl, you got beat by a girl. Suck it up, be a man, and get over it. Although, there have been times playing online when I have accidentally called girls little kids, and vice versa.

Me: Okay guys, leave him alone, he's just a kid.
    Kid: I'm a girl.
    Me: Ooooh...*siiiiigh* ouch, my bad.

    Or...:

Me: Big deal. So what if you got beat by a girl? That doesn't matter. What matters is she's good.
    Girl: I'm a BOY!!!
Me: Oops, *snicker* lol, oh snap. Sorryyy.

At this point I'm sure the kid wants his revenge lol.

Yeah, a lot of people still think they're going to have to be less attractive than the average girl or woman.

They're also still mostly considered in terms of their sex appeal rather than in terms of their skill or whether it's fun to play against or with them. Granted, most male gamers don't seem to particularly about the skill of other players outside of the homophobic 12 year olds who are scared of their own sexuality that have inundated Xbox Live, so there's not a whole lot of basis for how they should be considered if they were to be considered in the same way as their peers.

Both myself and my fiance play X-Box, X-box 360 etc. I can beat him at a lot of the games. I have been a gamer since I was 6 years old. I can beat guys at video games, card games, etc. I hate being underestimated. A lot of guys I play against I've been gaming a lot longer than them

There aren't enough of them to be noticed and if there are, they are sure as hell begin quiet about it. I rarely see girls with gaming T-shirts on or hear them talking about games or joining the guys on conversations about games.

There are girl gamers but I think they are all in the closet about it.

Maybe if they sold gaming shirts to women, that fit someone larger than a 10 year old.
