Hundreds of photographs of famous persons, including many pictures of Marilyn Monroe, have been sold at an auction in Poland for as much as $750,000. Images of Audrey Hepburn, Marlene Dietrich, Grace Kelly and Liza Minelli were also sold.

Getty Images

According to the New York Daily News, the 238 photos, taken by legendary photographer Milton H Greene, were sold in the auction house Desa Unicum in Warsaw, with only one photo remaining unsold. Around 500 bidders paid a total of 2.4 million Polish zlotys, making it the nations biggest ever photo auction.

The pictures of Monroe were mainly taken between 1953 and 1957, a time when Greene was working as her adviser and business partner. The shots, which include both black and white and color photos, and natural as well as studio surroundings, are valued so highly because many of them were made into prints during Marilyn's lifetime. Do you think photos of Marilyn Monroe would be worth paying this much for?

These are collector's items, so it is up to the collector to decide how much he/she is willing to pay.

As historical pieces they have value. I guess the uber rich serve some purpose, like keeping historical artifacts in good shape and also giving them to museums. To someone who has no food or shelter though, they would probably mean nothing. So the answer to your question is yes and no.

Portraits are worth as much as someone wants them to be.

Econ 101 - The higher the demand, the lower the quantity equals maximum return for the effort (or product).

As a retired photographer, if there is no demand, the only worth is the paper itself divided by half. Why only worth half of a sheet of paper? The other side is already used.

At least $750,000 and several of them ought to fetch at least six figures in the event that
they happen to go to auction. And photos of Norma Jean (Baker, Gallaher, Mortensen ?)
the war industry employee who would ultimately go on to become Marilyn Monroe should
fetch a pretty penny as well. Especially candid (but non papperazzi) photos of her.

Ownership of these images (which have been reproduced time and again for decades) are definitely a good investment. You think Marilyn will ever stop being Marilyn? Nope. Worth every penny.

She was not unique, merely successful at some things. We have women like her over the place in the entertainment field these days. We could print photos of them off our computers--if we really wanted to hang them somewhere.

The original photos and any rights to the negatives are just like a bunch of paint smeared on a canvas that people pay millions for.

Pretty digusting what the Kennedy Klan did to her and got away with.
