Are background checks enough to weed out abusers?

They will weed out those who are already in the system and are useful for that. However calling past positions and employers should be done also. One problem is that because of exposure to liability issues most people are reluctant to tell callers what they think. We find difficult screening potential employees because of this exposure and many will not say and if they do it will be only to say if they would consider rehiring a person.

I feel background checks are essential, but they need more than just that. They need to find out where these people live, where they work and warnings should be put out in the areas they are in...warnings mailed to people, not just told to look on the computer, because many don't think to do that. Children, be they teens to babies are Gods precious cargo and these sick perverts, including those that sell young girls for sex are the scum of the earth. They need to be found out and need to be jailed for many years for what they have been doing. This to me is the sickest thing on earth, to hurt and destroy children and teens for money and sick satisfaction. And parents that do this to their children are even sicker. This is the way satan works, not God.

I know what you're saying, but I'm talking about real sex offenders, etc. These people do need a good eye kept on them for our children's sake. We have one in our neighborhood not far from our place and our grandkids live near him, and believe me, we as a family do keep a good watch out for him.

An abuser molests, on average, 15-20 kids before getting caught. Background checks are a good idea, but they're no substitute for vigilance.

Parents should go with their gut instincts. Most of the time you feel something when you're around somebody like that. Don't ignore that feeling. Who cares if you seem paranoid. Which side do you want to err on?

Since the Vatican Gay fiasco several yrs back we have increasingly come to the conclusion that there is a direct correlation between one deviant behaviour and another...Just like a career criminal doesnt limit himself to one type of crime. If they are gay or lesbian...better look closely at their behavior around children as well. The priests were all "merely" homosexual before they magically transformed into pedophiles with their former homosexual label being substituted for the more libelous label of Child molesting pedophile. I wouldn't blame it on gays for the sole reason that straight people rape others as well. If it was delegated to ONLY gay people, that'd be one thing.

The true irony is that they condemn homosexuality right up until (And sometimes right after) they get caught with their pants down...Quite literally.

If there is a correlation it shold be studied and used as a background checking tool. Until we are sure that homosexuality does not lead to latent pedophilia; i say we dont take the chance with our children. Keep em out of schools and daycare and other children related positions such as youth pastors.

I'm going to have to say something, though, that NO BODY will like. It's the culture. Notice this is happening in schools, Churches, Boy Scouts, with parents, friends of the family, etc? I'm sure someone will take a two-year study and show how the stats are going down. I've never heard so much trash in the news. Almost a pandemic.

No one wants to get rid of the open deviance, so I guess do background checks, have good communication with the kids, keep an eye out of unusual behavior. Perhaps keep kids in groups or something?

They should just be put down problem solved.
