Are Actors Just 'Clowns for Hire'?

Leonardo DiCaprio has been nominated for three Oscars, two BAFTAs, and eight Golden Globes (winning the 2005 Globe for "Aviator"). He isn't the greatest actor on earth, but he has earned the respect and admiration of the film industry for his work in movies like "Titanic" and "Inception." But, despite all of that, he doesn't seem to have the highest esteem for his profession.

DiCaprio recently told The Sun, "I realize that I do not change the course of history. I am an actor, I do a movie, that’s the end of it. You have to realize we are just clowns for hire." He went on to explain that he almost turned down "Titanic," saying, "I would love to say I predicted it would be one of the biggest hits in film history. I didn't -- and wondered whether I should do it at all. I resisted it for a long time because I had been offered the film 'Boogie Nights.'" Do you agree with Leonardo DiCaprio? Are actors just "clowns for hire"?

Perhaps DiCaprio is, but for the most part, good actors spend years training and working on their craft. The best never stop learning. And for the record, professional clowns also spend years studying and perfecting their craft. DiCaprio probably should have done Boogie Nights instead of Titanic. It's clear he doesn't appreciate what it takes to be a good professional.

I don't thinks so, they have a learned craft, but they are paid way too much for what they do. Just as bad as sports athletes. I believe entertainers by way of movies/sports should not make over 500k a year. They are not worth it even in a free market. Doctors, nurses, educators, scientists those folks deserve the big bucks. If you are not saving a life or educating one in my humble opinion your over paid.

I suppose it really depends on the actor/actress. Are they acting because they really enjoy doing it? Are they trying to send good messages or change perspectives through their work? Or are they acting because that's what they're paid to do? I think for the most part actors take their job seriously and do it because they love it.

Maybe DiCaprio is, but the vast majority of actors take their jobs very seriously. It's like saying that surgeons are just glorified nurses.

I admire his candor. If other actors who seem to have to champion causes just because they're famous, that's fine for them They've learned a new hustle ala penn and jolie. Those people and people like them prove Leonardo's assertion. I wish all actors would put away their trumped up dignity and just do what they do; act.

Ah right. e.e I personally don't follow politics or have an opinion (I'm not old enough to vote anyway so it doesn't really matter |D) but judging from what I see here I assumed it was like a big thing over in America. n.n~ And yes, they all seem a bit nutcase-y.

    Yep...right behind politicians.

Don't get me wrong...movies are great...the biggest art form around.

But most actors, like most writers, artists, and any other creative types, are really only clowns for hire when you come down it it...doing things for mass entertainment, usually with little or no voice in the final outcome of the "product."

They do the best they can under the circumstances.

Actors are illusionist for entertainment. They create an illusion and their talent is allowing for that illusion to be believable. There are all kinds. Cate Blanchett is one of my favorites. Her talent is utterly amazing. Check out these movies back to back with her; 'The Missing', 'Bandits' or 'Elizabeth' - in no particular order and you'll see what I mean. Or watch Deniro in 'Untouchables' and 'Cape Fear' made the same yr. That is a showcase in raw talent. Watch Jamie Foxx transform into Ray Charles in 'Ray'.

You're freaking awesome. Cate is definitely my fave actress of ever; I wish she'd open a school because I would learn anything she could possibly teach me about the craft. Al Pacino is up there too. I didn't like De Niro so much in 'The Untouchables' -- I thought compared to his other work it was rather weak. I prefer him in 'Heat.'

I appreciate people's tastes can see how you got there from here. I forgot 'Heat'... Al Pachino's performance in 'Scent of a Woman' is just one of his best. He was in 'Heat' too come to think of it... as 'Vincent'. Him playing against Deniro's Neil McCaully was fascinating. I most loved Cate in 'The Missing' with Tommy Lee Jones. I remember her looking for her fiance in the beginning of the movie and finding him dead instead. That part where she's leading her 2nd daughter thru the woods at a full gallop on her horse is just priceless to me. But her crown achievement was 'Kate' in the 'Aviator'. She resurrected the total essence of the woman in that part. That movie was what made me feel that Leanord Di was an incredible actor.

Al in 'Scent of a Woman' is incredible. Not just the words, or the timbre, but the entire physicality of the role. Actors often very poorly imitate people with disabilities or handicaps -- because it's difficult to mentally remove something (like eyesight) that you don't know how to live without and technically still have. I just think of his final speech in the end -- not once does he let his eyes stray the way a person with sight would. And that diner scene in 'Heat' was just...gah! I loved it!

I think the reason why I love Cate so much is that she's not afraid to take risks. She's been Elizabeth and Bob Dylan. She's both searched for her missing daughter and also trying to hunt down and kill a 16 year old girl. And she's done it all with such fierceness and believability. As an actress, I definitely look up to her. I would take a career like hers over being some silly rom-com "it" girl any day.

In the sense that LdC meant it, of course. These are folks who make believe for a living. In the middle ages, actors were considered professional liars, and folks considered them untrustworthy. 'Course there was a cultural element to that, in terms of the people who typically became actors, and society has progressed beyond that view. But the kernel of truth remains.

I wouldn't make a big deal out of the "clowns for hire" line.

Read it in context. He was just driving home the point that actors don't change the course of history. They're not experts on any political issue, though they're often treated as such.

I went to high school with a girl who's an actress now. I didn't know her all that well, but I do know that she was acting a lot in school too, and was putting a lot of work and effort into it.

Acting is not as easy as it looks. It's like pro sports -- you watch a pro sporting event, and you think that the pros make the sport look easy.

Well, it's the same with acting. A professional actor makes it look easy. But it isn't.

That's just the perception. Real actors spend years perfecting their craft, and so do clowns for that matter. Maybe some hacks don't, but real actors.. Titanic should've been someone else, wish he'd gone to boogie nights.

DiCaprio atleast understands he is a player in a fantasy world. Too many actors and actress's think way to highly of themselves and their craft. Yes they are talented but it is just acting. why do you think we have all these gossip colums they hate and love them because the are for the most part slf absorded egotist.
