Anthony Hopkins began his movie career in 1967, in a little-known feature called "Red, White and Zero" and had his breakthrough the following year portraying Richard the Lionhearted in the Academy Award-winning drama "The Lion in Winter." After appearing with Katharine Hepburn and Peter O'Toole in that classic, Hopkins starred in a series of TV movies. He then resurfaced on the big screen in "Young Winston," a Winston Churchill biopic starring Robert Shaw that won a British Academy Award for its costumes. Major success finally occurred with a turn as a frustrated ventriloquist in the 1978 horror drama "Magic," which brought him his first Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor. Throughout the next decade, Hopkins found a mix of success (mainly on Tv, winning two Emmys for his efforts) and also several flops ("The Good Father"; "Desperate Hours").

In 1991, his status as a respected actor was elevated to iconic legend with his portrayal of Hannibal Lecter in "The Silence of the Lambs" for which he won an Academy Award as Best Actor. Throughout the '90s, Anthony Hopkins appeared in one compelling role after another. Hopkins excelled in Merchant-Ivory productions like "Howards End," "Remains of the Day" (an Oscar nomination) and "Surviving Picasso." He portrayed two American Presidents, "Nixon" and John Quincy Adams in "Amistad." Academy nominations were received for both portrayals. Unexpectedly, he even played Don Diego de la Vega, training a successor in "The Mask of Zorro." More recently, the now-knighted Sir Anthony Hopkins has remained visible in small releases like "The City of Your Final Destination" and blockbusters like "Thor." Fans can next see the actor in a biopic of famed "Master of Suspense" director Alfred Hitchcock. Choose the Anthony Hopkins film you think is the best.

    Nixon (1995)

I chose "Nixon" because here is this Welsh-born actor playing a very complex American President. He avoided making the former president into a caricature, and in the process made it easier to understand the man. He shows how someone with Nixon's background and personality was able to make it to the top of the political ladder, in spite of it all. It's a remarkable performance.

I mainly watched it to see how Jody Foster could hold up working with him. And she did a great job. Hopkins also played a great Zorro.

And yet Brian Cox got to the role before Hopkins did, in the often overlooked thriller "Manhunter" (1986).

He is such a consummate actor, it is hard to pick one. Of the movies listed, "The Lion in Winter" is my favorite, but I don't really consider that a Hopkins movies as his role was a supporting one.

I really liked "Fracture" and "The Rite".

"Legends of the Fall" is a very fine entertainment by the director of "Glory" and "The Last Samurai."
