While the actual awards were reasonably predictable, no one could have predicted the staggering mediocrity of the Oscars' "young and hip" hosts, Anne Hathaway and James Franco.
Their jokes and presentation were at times uncomfortably awkward. Franco seemed to be making a concerted effort to keep the same clueless half-grin on his face for the entire show, and though Hathaway tried to keep it interesting, the writing fell consistently flat.
The night was doubly bad for Franco, who lost out on his Oscar bid for Best Actor to "The King's Speech" star Colin Firth, and launched the lamest joke of the night.
Cracking a quick Charlie Sheen joke worked for Ricky Gervais at the Golden Globes, but when Franco came out dressed like Marilyn Monroe, there was no way it was going to fare well.

"[Hathaway] got to wear a tuxedo," he said, "so I wore this. Weird part is I just got a text message from Charlie Sheen."
Yawn.
Even Hathaway's desperate attempt to turn Melissa Leo's renegade F-bomb into comic gold was a disaster.
She quipped, "I thought 'F' stood for 'The Fighter' ... It’s the young and hip Oscars!"
Is this year's show a sign of things to come? Hope not.

They were bad, sure - a seriously STONED Franco anxious to get out of there and a childish and screaming Hathaway acting WAY too excited - but they had their funny moments.
The Marilyn Monroe moment was actually pretty good.
Anne, no.
thanks dear
even now while long gone,, he will bring more life to the awards
dont get me wrong, i love franco!
word.
Gimme, Billy Crystal, Alec Baldwin, Steve Martin, Whoopie Goldberg or Ellen DeGenres ANY time. Kirk Douglas would of made a better host, he was awesome ~<3
