First, Jennifer Aniston was under fire for saying that it's OK for women to get pregnant with a "turkey baster." Now, she's said a word that even little kids know not to use.

On Thursday's live episode of "Live With Regis and Kelly," Aniston used the word "retard" to make fun of herself.

While discussing a photo shoot in which Aniston dressed up like Barbra Streisand, Aniston said, "Yes, I play dress up. I do it for a living, like a retard."

Advocacy groups hopped on the incident right away. The Special Olympics released a statement saying, "[We are] always disappointed when the R-word is used, especially by someone who is influential to society...the R-word, even in an off-the-cuff self-deprecating manner, dehumanizes people with intellectual disabilities and perpetuates painful stereotypes."

But Aniston is not alone in the open mouth, insert foot department. Dr. Laura was forced to quit her radio show after using the controversial N-word 11 times on the air last week. Mel Gibson has been caught on tape calling his ex-girlfriend every racist, sexist slur imaginable. And who can forget Michael Richards' rant, or Sinead O'Connor's grave insult to the Pope?

I never say the "R" word alone in my home nor do I say it out in the public. I had a best friend whose sister had a disability and I saw how that word "Retard" affected her and how much it would hurt her when she'd hear that word. Because to me retard is something that doesn't work, something thats not "right". It definitly should be not used as an adj. to describe someone, or someones actions..
  • Nokkenbuer 2011/05/13 00:21:44
Dr. Laura's use of the N-word was worse.
    Nokkenbuer
Retard wasn't used offensively when she spoke and thus it shouldn't matter. And that's coming from someone with mental disabilities and has worked with people with similar problems. Dr. Laura's usage was much more unnecessary, however. Not only that, but it's more offensive to mainstream society.

When I was growing up (I am Jens age) we all called other kids retards when they did something retarded. It means something totally different when you call a mentally retarded person a retard. We wouldn't do that.

Back then we had fights on the playground and no one got sued. We didn't teach everyone that being queer made a person superior to everyone that was straight. We were allowed to believe in the Bible. If a person was an illegal alien we didn't give them medical benefits, college and a free place to live. So much for America, we will be all speaking Arabic before you know it.

Really? What is this world coming to when this is something important....like a person stated below, it is a real word with a definition...I fail to see the problem. She was OBVIOUSLY not trying to offend anyone by her statement, just poke fun at herself. As far as Dr. Laura.... if a black person says n***r, nobody cares. But if a white person says it in the same sentence and context everyone gets offended!! Someone needs to decide if it is a bad word or a good word and that's that. I'm sick of everyone getting offended by everything! You're only african-american if YOU moved here from Africa. My family is from Germany and I don't get offended if don't get called german-american. I was born here...I am american. Let's all grow up and realise we are all the same just with different qualities. Stop looking at reasons to get pissed off at people by turning innocent words into something hateful so you have a reason to be angry. To conclude my whole point, it would have been wrong if she had said something like "I hate retarded people" but she didn't. If what she did say offended you, then grow up. If you are handicapped and that word offends you, then I am sorry that society has told you that you should be offended by that word. I have nothing against any specific race, anybody of diminished mental or physical abilities...but I am against people who are and people on the other side who always feel offended by everything without proper reason.

Aniston was just joking about herself being a retard, so what?Dr. Laura did not say it to discriminate against anyone but to make a point. So I really think neither of them are to blame.

Honestly, I don't think of someone mentally disabled or handicapped when I say retard, because retard sounds degrading. When my friends and I say it we mean it like idiot, not someone who was born with a mental handicap.
A vein in my friend Michael's head burst when he was a baby, and he is slightly disabled, but even he says: "You're such a retard!" I think linking retard with handicapped is far more insulting.

Listen to the way she rants at the end, the Doctor, she knows that she went to far and let her own personal feelings overwhelm the conversation. In addtion, by ranting the way she appears to purposefully be attempting to divert the attention from her own personal lack of judgement. Just because some use the word does not mean that others should uphold that or feel like they can use it. This is a lesson taught at an early age, don't do what others are doing.... it can lead you to trouble.

I don't believe she meanit in any way to refer to mentally challenged people. The word has also been used in the past to describe a social deficit. However, as far as I'm concerned, the "N" word signifies ignorance by the person saying it, Black or White.

What in the World ? We have freedom of speech. These are just words and we are becoming intolerant to Words ? There are more things in our life to "take care of " than
attacking people who use words we don't like to hear. My personal word is (Shh! mulch) Maybe the government will add a new agency called "Word Police" so that if you do have sosomething to say you will have to use your hands for sign language

Turn on BET sometime. It's okay for Black Comedians to use the N-word when talking about each other and cracker in reference to whites. Since when is it okay to have double standards??? Our President seemed to have no problem with Rev Wright's hate speech toward whites and Jews until Wright became a political liability and then he threw him under the bus. We as a society are hamstrung by double standards and political correctness; perhaps what we need is thicker skin.

I LOVE your answer!! I also am "guilty" of using the retarded word, but not in the negative way some people think. Generally it's about myself, i.e. "why am I SO retarded??!!" when I do something stupid, in my opinion, or just don't seem to get "it". So, it isn't JUST women who use the "R" word, as I hear it all the time from men, but with no disrespect to people with mental disabilities. The media just needs to stop analyzing every word a celebrity says, deliberately looking for something to criticize them about.
