If you are an animal lover, as I am, you will detest this practice, the people who do it, the owners who condone or allow it.

The Tennessee Walking horse has a reputation for having a calm disposition and a naturally smooth riding gait. It is a calm and easygoing breed, typically easy to train. While the horses are famous for flashy movement, they are quite hardy, popular for trail and pleasure riding as well as show. The annual Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration is a great place to see these beautiful animals in action.

Unfortunately some of the 'training' that leads to the exaggerated gate of these beautiful horses is literally animal abuse. Not all Tennessee Walkers are treated this way, but many are - those whose owners vie in competition for the grand prize.

Soring is a practice where the horse's pastern (ankle) is treated with caustic chemicals and then chained or something similar so to cause pain. When the horse steps down and feels the pain, the natural instinct is to raise it's foot. That is the tenet behind this abusive practice.

The 2012 Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration had lined up Pepsi as a corporate sponsor. Something the show has not had much of. ABC News then did a story on the soring abuse and Pepsi pulled out. Good for Pepsi.

If you haven't seen the video, I recommend viewing it. Please be advised it is difficult to watch. If you want to take action, sign a petition to the Secretary of Agriculture.

You're right, that was very disturbing to watch. Yet another practice of horrible abuse of animals, and one I didn't know about, and I know of SO many.......
The petition wasn't there, but I plan on doing my 'daily clicks' on that site and Care2, so maybe I'll find one.
