Get it? "Angry Brides"? It's like "Angry Birds," but different. But the creators aren't too worried about how the game will be received, because "Angry Brides" has a message. The game was created by Indian matchmaking site Shaadi in order to raise awareness of India's dowry system, which often leads to violent feuds. They hope the game's slightly misleading title will draw attention to the issue.
The game, available for free on Facebook, has the player toss various household items like shoes and brooms at a lineup of price-tagged men. Each time you hit one, his price goes down and that money is added to your "anti-dowry" fund. Once you get enough rupees in your fund, you can proceed to the next lineup.
The site's Facebook page reads: "According to the NCRB's 2007 statistics, India witnesses 1 dowry death every 4 hours! This is creating a serious imbalance in the Male:Female ratio in India. According to the 2011 government census, India has only 914 girls for every 1,000 boys!" So what do you think? Will the popularity of "Angry Birds" consequentially lead to more of a spotlight on "Angry Brides" -- and the danger of dowries in India?
