With the passing of the legendary Andy Griffith, people are waxing poetic about the good old days of television. It was a simple time on the small screen, when married couples slept in separate beds and “I Dream if Jeannie's” Barbara Eden couldn't show her belly button. But it was also a time when the medium was breaking ground, setting standards for the shows to come and creating programming that still remains popular today.

Sure, "The Andy Griffith Show" on the surface was a down-home, feel-good family sitcom, but it was also the first series to feature a single dad, who was raising his boy, Opie, with the help of his family and friends.

Meanwhile, Marlo Thomas' "That Girl" showed young women they didn’t have to be married and have a family to define themselves. And "The Carol Burnett Show" took the variety show to new heights, and its comedic genius has never been surpassed by any series in the genre that's followed.

"Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In" dared to go where no comedy show had gone before. It brought the hippie culture to the mainstream and introduced such catchphrases as “Sock it to me!” and “Here comes the judge.” Click through our slideshow and let us know: What was the best TV show of the 1960s?

I watched them all and liked them all, but there was nothing quite like the cast of the Carol Burnett Show cracking up in the middle of an improv.

The ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW was a very wholesome, heat warming and funny. But after Don Knotts left and the show was made into color it really went into serious decline. Another criticism TV LAND shows ANDY GRIFFITH a little on their network.

Excuse me, I meant to say TV LAND shows ANDY GRIFFITH a little too "much" on their network.

I had to pick before commenting, but to me Twilight Zone was far better. All of 'your' choices were fine, but there were many more - family, comedy -shows that could or should have been included.

We need a return to the shows like those of the 50s and 60s. They espoused high morals, American values and Family. The garbage parading as Television entertainment today are a national embarrassment and are a central part in the dumbing down of the people. Leave it to Beaver

    The donna reed show

There were so many great tv shows in the 60's. Look at what kids have to watch today, if they watch tv. NOTHING compares to what the kids of the 50's and 60's had to enjoy. It was simply the greatest tv generation.

Carol Burnett's complete lack of dignity is what made her comedy a classic. I liked the way she always spoofed the classic movies. If that show was on today, I do not think any of the viewers would understand it. But I liked the way she spoofed "Gone With The Wind" and "Sunset Boulevard." Gloria Swanson must have like it, because she did a guest appearance on the show.

Of those listed, "The Andy Griffith Show" was the best. "Dick Van Dyke" ran a close second. The other shows were just plain weird. I didn't understand any of them. I was just a kid then, but that's just it: I understood Sheriff Andy Taylor, his string of deputies, and the townsfolk of Mayberry, NC, very well. Not bad for a show that didn't even pretend to be "a kid's show."
