  4. “Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In”

    “Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In”

Long before there was “Saturday Night Live,” “Laugh-In” was bringing cutting-edge sketch comedy to TV with hip, young talents like Lily Tomlin, Goldie Hawn, Artie Johnson, and Ruth Buzzi.

  5. “That Girl”

    “That Girl”

Marlo Thomas was every young girl’s idol in the late ‘60s. They wanted to dress like her, live in a New York City apartment, and have a boyfriend, who they did not have to marry.

  6. “The Carol Burnett Show”

  7. “I Dream of Jeannie”

    “I Dream of Jeannie”

  8. “Bewitched”

    “Bewitched”

Who didn’t wish they could wiggle their nose and instantly tidy up the house or change their husband’s ad campaign to woo the client? Samantha Stevens cast a bit of a spell on everyone.

With the passing of the legendary Andy Griffith, people are waxing poetic about the good old days of television. It was a simple time on the small screen, when married couples slept in separate beds and “I Dream if Jeannie's” Barbara Eden couldn't show her belly button. But it was also a time when the medium was breaking ground, setting standards for the shows to come and creating programming that still remains popular today.

Sure, "The Andy Griffith Show" on the surface was a down-home, feel-good family sitcom, but it was also the first series to feature a single dad, who was raising his boy, Opie, with the help of his family and friends.

Meanwhile, Marlo Thomas' "That Girl" showed young women they didn’t have to be married and have a family to define themselves. And "The Carol Burnett Show" took the variety show to new heights, and its comedic genius has never been surpassed by any series in the genre that's followed.

"Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In" dared to go where no comedy show had gone before. It brought the hippie culture to the mainstream and introduced such catchphrases as “Sock it to me!” and “Here comes the judge.” Click through our slideshow and let us know: What was the best TV show of the 1960s?

I watched them all and liked them all, but there was nothing quite like the cast of the Carol Burnett Show cracking up in the middle of an improv.

Well it began either '57 or 'early '58 and by '61 Gerry Mathers was in high school. That was the last season it aired because he got too mature to be cute.

Andy Griffith was one of the best actors who truly became the character they played. That is a talent that is dearly missed in hollywood today and very hard if not impossible to learn. It's a talent that either you have it or you don't. He was loved and cared for by all his fans and all who ever knew him. He will be deeply missed by all and the world now has a deep void in it that may never be filled.

I will never forget the night he was a guest on Jimmy Dean and quietly stole the show.

Actually it was a time when you could watch any/all shows and really not be worried or ashamed of the program. Great family VALUES and just plain great entertainment. Then we hit a curve and for the most part (older folks) see only garbage shows or at a minium XXXXXX shows with filthy scenes and laungage. How times have changed. Bring back the old days and shows.

Unfortunaely that will never happen. The young today are so much different than the young of 50 or more years ago. I mean that in a very respectful manner as I'mn not blasting them or their beliefs.

Carol Burnett was awesome, especially the way they left in the bloopers and goofups Dean Martin did that, too. But c'mon, folks...where's "Star Trek"?
You know, the show that spawned four spinoff sequel shows, 11 movies (and one on the way), and generated a cultural phenomenon? That show....

This was truly the era of "chewing gum for the mind" Frankly I liked Glen Campbell the best. I had forgotten that Star Trek debuted in the 60's. It was teriffic and much better than the clones that followed. Agree that Carol and cast were probably the best comedy variety show ever. Laugh in was funny at times but more dedicated to "you can't do that" than really being funny. fch

Lots of people forget that "Hee-Haw" was created as a counter to "Laugh-In".
H-H was made for the more traditionalist, down-home folks, while L-I was for the mod, hip crowd. Well, L-I was cancelled in 1973; H-H gave its last "Saaa-lute!" in.....1992.
    Which worldview won that round?

For me it'd be a toss up between The Beverly Hillbillies and Rowan and Martin's Laugh In For myself,Laugh In was can't miss television.I'd make sure that I had all of my chores and homework out of the way so I could sit and enjoy that show! They set the table for Saturday Night Live, Fridays, Mad TV, In Living Color, and all of the other comedy shows that would come later.even John Byner's "Bizarre" owed a nod to Laugh In.
