Andrew Bynum committed a flagrant foul against Jose Barea during the final minutes of the Dallas Mavericks sweep over the defending NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers. Bynum embarrassed his team and coach Phil Jackson by committing such a flagrant foul. The Lakers were sure to lose by this point in the game.

Andrew Bynum was ejected for the flagrant foul for spearing Jose Barea in the ribs during a layup with 8:21 remaining in the 4th quarter. Bynum showed more disrespect and immaturity as he took off his jersey on his way off the court.

WATCH Andrew Bynum's Flagrant Foul [Video]:

Was Andrew Bynum's flagrant foul just a foul limited to the NBA rules and penalties? Bynum was immediately ejected from the game, but should he face more penalties from the NBA or even the Dallas, Texas criminal justice system?

When in the event of a blowout such as they were, no Laker starters should have been in the game. Phil deserves a fine and if Bynum was any way sincere about his apology, he should offer JJ keys to a new car/truck.

I think what happened is that Andrew Bynum was frustrated and he knew the Lakers were going to loose and he lost control of his emotions.

Not only that the dirty foul was clearly race based. There's a long history of black players making extremely dirty fouls on players of other races. Kareem Abdul Jabbar sucker punched Kent Bensen when he was trying to break up a fight, Kermit Washington did the same to Rudy Tomjanovich. race hate is alive and well in the NBA and it lives on a one way street.

washington rudy tomjanovich race hate alive nba lives street Kareem Jabar and Bensen washington rudy tomjanovich race hate alive nba lives street Rudy Tomjanovich

I would not go so far as to inject race into the issue. I think what happened is that Andrew Bynum was frustrated and he knew the Lakers were going to loose and he lost control of his emotions.

He flat out assaulted Barea with the martial arts type shot to the ribs. He should be facing charges, not just an expulsion or minor fine.

Flagrant, probably one of the worst I've seen.

Of course, to lose to classless Cuban would probably drive one a bit nuts, but self-restraint should have been a little more in order than that.

Of course it's a crime, he physically assaulted somoeone outside the parameters of the game and rules. If he did while they were walking down the street it would be a crime. Should be no different because it was a sporting event. File the charges, already.

In law the crime of battery is an act, done for the purpose of causing a harmful or offensive contact with another person, which actually causes such contact. In sporting events participants consent to the type of contact typically associated with the sport, so the hard foul, usually an unsuccessful attempt to block a shot, is never battery but just a part of the game.

Here, Mr. Bynam fired his elbow to the rib cage of a defenseless Mr. Barea for the sole purpose of making contact and causing damage. This cowardly action had nothing to do with the game of basketball.

Mr. Bynam committed a crime. The resulting harm was not serious (thankfully) so it is not worth involving the law, but the NBA should take a hard line and impose a suspension of at least one year to discourage this type of behavior.

I agree with you except that whether or not there was serious unjury the crime is the same. If he is not charged and gets away with it, what will he do next year. He'll do it again and someone might have their neck broke. The law is to deter crimes like this to the best of its ability but if nothing is done more people will get hurt. These "flagrant fouls" were also predetermined as more than one or even two occured.

and another point if he gets away with it in "professionalism" then street thugs will be justified in what they do.

Say if you have a traffic altercation, get out and slap a guy, you are open for prosecution, even if no serious harm was done, I am thinking 1/2 the season, some mandatory anger management courses and some community service in DALLAS, tending to kids in Scottish Rite or similar hospital

Total lack of respect for his team, coach and the NBA itself. He doesnt deserve the right to represent any of them any more. It is a league problem though and not a criminal problem.

Andrew Bynum committed a crime and the DA in Texas should arrest him. If the Commissioner of the NBA wants to get rid of Bynum's type of thug thinking he must suspend Bynum for at least a year. The commissioner should really just put him out of the league. Bynum cared nothing about putting a fellow player out of the league for life. Actually, he showed clearly that he does not understand the difference of playing defensive football and defense in basketball. Bynum needs to go to jail.

I DO NOT THINK HE COMMITTED A FLAGRANT FOUL!!! but since the option of ("your opinion here") is not an option, i'll write it here. /////where i grew up, that was called "jersey ball" some people know it as "street ball" or even "jail ball". anything goes on the court. except no weapons. throw a punch or even a kick. now if the NBA did full contact...then i'd be a season ticket holder

this isn't street ball, its a professional league. if bynum the scum can't discern between the two then he should be barred from playing in ANY organized league. and if YOU can't discern between the two, then I feel sorry for your blatant ignorance.

by the way, I grew up in desolate circumstances too and if anyone did that to someone else on the court, there would be repercussions usually involving the gratuitous and brutal beating of the offender later that night by the victim's family members. Should that happen to Bynum because its all the same?

the funniest thing is that this fool "thesmokeydice" is from Iowa, haha, ya real rough neighborhoods buddy.

by the rules of the league its obviously a flagrant foul, so thats just a joke saying its not even a flagrant. Bynum should be banned from the league. The fool has a been handed a winning lottery ticket by getting into the NBA and being paid millions to play basketball. But instead of appreciating it, the entitled prick acts like a child and could very well be suspended for a whole season and maybe banned. He already sent Beasley to the hospital with this same play and Stern has to act swiftly and sternly.

No matter what happens, the disrespect he showed to Phil Jackson in his last game of the league will not long be forgotten, the Lakers will trade him and most coaches will not want such a liability. Way to be a child and throw a temper tantrum Bynum, you just cost yourself millions and maybe you'll have to actually work for a living like the rest of us now. what a douche bag.

"desolate circumstances"? sounds more like "the burbs" to me son. spoiled rich people complaining that in a physical sport. one guy happened to "tag" the other guy a little harder than he should have. wah wah wah. get your pacifier and bottle out and have a good little cry over it. then take yourself off of the cross and use the wood to get over it.

Then he should go back to playing in the streets and leave pro ball to the "PROS"!!! If everyone went around throwing fists on the court, we wouldn't have any players! Everyone would be injured each game!

I'm not sure what it was. All I know is that was just absolutely classless from Andrew Bynum. I was shocked when he would do something like that because it was just an obvious intent to injure out of frustration. There is no way a guy who has won 2 championships should do something like that. I hope he gets suspended big time for it because that stuff should be eliminated from the game. Mike Tirico said it right when he called "Bush League," that's exactly what it was.
