Anderson Cooper Pummeled in Egypt: Brave or Wimpy?

Anderson Cooper isn't much for violence, but he had a very up-close encounter with it while visiting Egypt to cover the revolution.

The CNN journalist told David Letterman about his trip on Wednesday, admitting that he had been "pummeled" by rowdy Mubarak supporters while reporting there. He showed a video clip of his crew being hit, kicked, harassed, and even splashed with water while trying to make their way across the region.

"Being pummeled? I don't recommend it," Cooper said. "I'd never been hit in the head before ... People came from all around, surrounding us, punching us, kicking us, trying to rip the clothes off my female producer. It was weird. And we were lucky, frankly."

He continued, "I would start to slap back and then realize this is going to make it worse. My adrenaline was pumping so much. I've never really been in a fight like this or attacked by a mob like this."

He also noted that he "had no doubt [the attack] was organized," and suspected that many of the pro-Mubarak men who attacked his crew, whom he referred to as "thugs," were hired hands and secret police.

Anyone who voted wimpy is just stupid. I doubt if any of you have the guts to go cover this story or any of the others Cooper has that have put him in danger.

Any one who can take a ass whopping is brave to me. I am shocked that a guy his age has never been in a fight? Maybe he is the type to have always avoided them, so that is kind of wimpy, because he may be the type that goes along just to get along and never speak up for himself, or anyone else so he will not get into a fight, but this experience may have toughened him up.

So he is claiming he was pummeled, yet there wasn't a mark on him unlike Greg Palkot and his photagrpher who still had marks and broken bones a week later.

I Remember During The Haiti Ordeal. There were some older guys beating on a ten year old kid. they were all huddled around him just stomping his ass into the ground. anderson shoved them off the kid picked him off the ground & hi tailed it out of there. i thought damn i've never seen a journalist do that before. so i'd say he's got some guts. most people would've been worrying whether or not their cameraman was getting the shot.

I've played pickup basketball games at church that were much rougher than this. Cooper is a wuss. Reminds me of John Kerry. People who are really brave don't need to make mountains out of molehills. And that crowd looked quite tame. I've seen anti-furr protests that were orders of magnitude more violent. Cooper needs to grow a pair.

Actually dumb, just like every other reporter who was walking down the streets there. They way they were being attacked isn't worth losing my life over "getting they scoop" on the other networks. They should have used a "news pool", IMHO.

For those of you who said you would have fought back, you're lying. When you have an entire crowd of people fighting you, you know it's a battle you're not going to win.

When I was in the Ghetto in Brazil a guy jumped my friend. I came up behind him, tackled him, pulled him off my friend and got my friend out of there. Thats brave. Cooper quote "slapped back, then realized that would only make it worse" I would have gone down kicking and screaming. For me it would have been like, yeah, youll take me down. But im taking as many of you F****rs down with me as i can.

No "other" choice, but he's too cocky and bold to be a wimp, so brave was my choice. He's really looking for that big story isn't he? But that's what journalists do - risk their lives to give us their views.

He went into the middle of a revolution and was going to report it. He only left when they said they would decapitate him if he stayed. There is no need for him to be there at this point. They have news casters in Egypt. It would be asinine if he stayed.
  • matt Captain... 2011/02/11 22:29:32

They werent going to decapitate him. He was in virtually no danger. The media just spin it that way.

Cooper is pretty brave to go and report from a foreign country, ready to explode, you have to have balls to do that. It's easy for those in the safe compounds of their homes back here in the states to call some one whimpy.

I used to live in the statistically most dangerous neighborhood in Brazil, which itself is a very dangerous country. I was mugged there and I had to rescue friends from fights. Ive had knives and guns pulled on me, ive had my life threatened by people who have already killed others. Cooper is what we would call in Brazil a baitola, or a mulherzinho. Hes a massive pansy as evidenced by the fact that he is gay and the fact that he "slapped them back". Ive never met a tough gay dude, and ive met lots of gays (i lived in san francisco too) He could have easily dispersed that crowd if he would have laid one of them flat. Break their F***ing nose or their arm, see how eager they are to mess with you then. I cant believe he didnt have a gun with him. They should have sent Bas Rutten from HDNet out to Egypt. He wouldnt be a wimp for sure.

Anytime you are in a Middle East country with the possibility of some nut walking up with a bomb strapped to their body, I think your and either brave or stupid. Since this was his job and he had to be there, I'll give him the brave tag!
