After years of speculation, CNN anchor Anderson Cooper finally came out of the closet Monday. He didn’t take to the airwaves to share the news. Instead, he wrote an open letter to his friend Andrew Sullivan at the Daily Beast. Anderson Cooper stated, "The fact is, I'm gay, always have been, always will be, and I couldn't be any more happy, comfortable with myself, and proud." It’s not news to his family and friends, who have been aware of the details of his personal life for a long time. But it does finally bring an end to the speculation that has long been floating around gossip columns and was even the focus of an Out magazine cover story in 2007 entitled “Glass Closet.”

So some might wonder why it took the host of CNN’s “Anderson Cooper: 360” and the syndicated talk daytime show “Anderson” so long to finally speak up about his personal life. As he told Sullivan, “It's become clear to me that by remaining silent on certain aspects of my personal life for so long, I have given some the mistaken impression that I am trying to hide something – something that makes me uncomfortable, ashamed or even afraid. This is distressing because it is simply not true."

But some wonder if Cooper waited too long to come forward and be honest about his personal life. Others wonder if it’s become a bigger story that it might have been because he kept it quiet for so many years. Fans defend his choice saying he has a right to maintain his privacy in any way he chooses. So we ask: Was Anderson Cooper’s announcement shocking -- or did you kind of know that he was gay before he officially announced it?

Neither shocked nor care. It doesn't matter to me one way or the other. He's a terrific journalist and he actually does stories and interview about something OTHER THAN POLITICS. The 24 hour news stations seem to think that's the whole world ---or they are just lazy and politics is easy because they can repeat what politicians have said on other shows and ask more politicians about what they said and it goes on endlessly. At least Anderson Cooper does more that just add to the political echo chamber. Beyond that, I don't care if he is gay or not.

And I also did not "really" know. but I don't care. And what would change even if I had,. nothing. My life does not change, and nor will others who have one. There are some events that simply muster my.. 'no one will know what kind of a damn I don't or do give' about when, how, what, where or why. Again, what would change?

Not shocked, just a little bit surprised. Nobody coming out after Ricky Martin Shocks me anymore lol. I am so proud of them to have the Courage to step out of the closest. Anderson like Roxy are both remarkable in their craft, a great Journalist :& an awesome Musician!! I have so much Respect or all of them! My first & only Husband is gay, we're good friends, we've known easch other since he was 12, me 13. He knew he'd Mary me from the moment he met me!! :) What ppl do n their bedroom is their business as long as they're not in mine lol! Gay ppl ate just as human as straight ppl & sometimes have a much bigger Heart!

I like Anderson Cooper. I had a conversation about him being gay with a friend of mine a few weeks ago. My friend told me that he heard Anderson had a girlfriend and I just laughed. If anyone had any doubt, that laughing fit he had a while back, where he giggled himself silly, should have been proof enough. That was truly bizarre!

Cooper's announcement carried no professional risk since his CNN ratings have tanked and the audience to his syndicated talk show is tiny. Perhaps his poor ratings are due to his lack of a clear identity, i.e. is he a hard-hitting news reporter or Kathy Griffin's BFF?
