Anderson Cooper Finally Comes Out: Shocked or Knew It All Along?

After years of speculation, CNN anchor Anderson Cooper finally came out of the closet Monday. He didn’t take to the airwaves to share the news. Instead, he wrote an open letter to his friend Andrew Sullivan at the Daily Beast. Anderson Cooper stated, "The fact is, I'm gay, always have been, always will be, and I couldn't be any more happy, comfortable with myself, and proud." Find out what else he had to say at 1:25 in the video below!

It’s not news to his family and friends, who have been aware of the details of his personal life for a long time. But it does finally bring an end to the speculation that has long been floating around gossip columns and was even the focus of an Out magazine cover story in 2007 entitled “Glass Closet.”

So some might wonder why it took the host of CNN’s “Anderson Cooper: 360” and the syndicated talk daytime show “Anderson” so long to finally speak up about his personal life. As he told Sullivan, “It's become clear to me that by remaining silent on certain aspects of my personal life for so long, I have given some the mistaken impression that I am trying to hide something – something that makes me uncomfortable, ashamed or even afraid. This is distressing because it is simply not true."

But some wonder if Cooper waited too long to come forward and be honest about his personal life. Others wonder if it’s become a bigger story that it might have been because he kept it quiet for so many years. Fans defend his choice saying he has a right to maintain his privacy in any way he chooses. So we ask: Was Anderson Cooper’s announcement shocking -- or did you kind of know that he was gay before he officially announced it?

I have to ask. When, in a climate of such disgust and non acceptance, towards the gay community, does this kind of thing receive such attention? The sheer duplicity of this is so mundane. Are we either going to accept the gay community, as worthy of being treated as human beings, or are we going to continue with the normal stone age approach, of fear and loathing? We still have so far to go. Is it no wonder that evolution is so hard a concept to accept? After all, everything with evolution actually takes the investment of time...Just a thought....

The biggest problem is that nobody cares and that really rubs them raw.

You are right. Seems that caring is a lost art, and soon to be memory. It seems that caring, is even a burden to those who do. Why else would they care so passionately for some, and not at all for others?...Just a thought...

i usually try not to glean any meaning from a single word. However, I think I understand the meaning in your cryptic response. And should I be in the right path, I have to agree. Inundation of a thing, can cause resistance...Just a thought

I don't think resistance is the right idea. The novelty of the event has worn off because it happens so often. Once was great, twice was fine, 195 is so what.

I meant resistance, born more out of reaction to a thing, than the thing itself. Like a starving dog, that still wont take food gently, years after it has been fed regularly. The dog is convinced that if it lets its guard down, the circumstances will change or revert. As for the event itself? I think that those who would care. already expect the grandiose, and those who don't, try to pretend it doesn't happen. Either way, I think your "saturation", applies quite nicely....Just a thought....

That fact is he's a good journalist who I often don't agree with politically and don't like the way he attacks certain religious groups. But he does go to countries that are Muslim to get dangerous stories. Places where if they knew he was gay they would kill him. So keeping it quiet might have saved his life in certain Muslim countries.

There is a huge Gay population in Muslim countries. Its more common than you think. The city of Kandahar in Afghanistan is one of the larges Gay cities in the world. The way my sister in law who is from Afghanistan explains it....."The whole city is Gay".

Incredibly well dressed and never seen in the company of women for more than a photo-op and what some could describe as "too handsome" for his own good. If any one missed that, they also missed it on the Village People and Rob Halford of Judas Priest!

I'm not shocked, just lousy choices to pick from. I'd check the box that says, "Who gives a rat's ass what flavor he is?'' Never cared for him one way or the other.
