"American Idol" returns for its 12th season on FOX in January 2013 and after much speculation and negotiation, the judging panel has been finalized. The judges include three new major names and one popular "Idol" veteran fans already know.

Young Money Entertainment's queen and best-selling recording artist Nicki Minaj brings her unique style and perspective to "Idol." One can say she caters not only to current "Idol" fans with her star power as an active, relevant recording artist, but to the younger viewers her hit music appeals to. The rapping sensation could also potentially bring in hip-hop fans that may not have given "Idol" a chance had she not been selected as a judge. Speaking of bringing in new fans, country music star Keith Urban looks to do the same this upcoming season with his popularity.

Perhaps the biggest star of all is the iconic Mariah Carey, whose longevity in the music business is unmatched amongst her fellow judges. And then there is the likable and familiar Randy Jackson, who almost didn't end up returning for another season. Jackson remains as the only judge left from the inaugural 'Idol' season.

Wait so it WASN'T cancelled already? Well this is pretty depressing. I just can't see myself watching this show anymore. It's like they're sucking any life it still has and just won't let it go peacefully into the pit of forgotten TV shows.

Lol. Nicki Minaj? Really? How can she judge musical talent when she has none. Imo this show fell off for me when Taylor Hicks won over Chris Daughtry, Elliot Yamin and Paris.

Keith Urban was a good choice. However I believe Nicki Minaj will make the show intolerable to watch.

I've been boycotting it for years because it has BEEN well beyond its due date. Only few real artists have prospered from the show, and most of those few didn't even win it.

We're all bloody well tired of it. Just put the dang thing out of its misery, especially now that it has to suffer the Abomi-Nicki Min-strocit-aj.

This is going to be an epic fail this year. Nikki Minaj's 15 minutes of fame will be over by halfway through the season. As far as the other guy everyone knows that he will go back to nascar racing as soon as Nicole Kidman fixes him up, oh wait wrong guy. Who is this guy anyway?

Considering the fact that the last time I watched American Idol Fantasia won. Not planning on watching the show no matter who are the judges. Judging by this list that only encourages my statement.

American Idol is so pointless now. There's only one of the original judges, and none of the winners actually do anything anymore. Why don't they just cancel it? Other singing shows are more popular now...

People with no talent judging a talent show? (Besides Mariah Carey who is indeed talented). Nicki Minaj has made American music a laughing stock and Keith Urban is a cookie cutter country singer (and Australian to boot right?) American idol has done more to kill real music since the boy band explosion in the late 90s.

i am actually disappointed even though I do like keith urban and have liked an occasional mariah carey song but i don't believe that any of the three were picked for their expertise in judging new talent. i think they were picked for their popularity to bring in viewers. good luck to the contestants this season.
