Jennifer Lopez in a sexy bra top! An Aerosmith concert! Rihanna! A live marriage proposal, and, lest we forget, a brand-new American Idol.

These were only some of the highlights of Wednesday night's "American Idol" finale, which crowned handsome (and talented) 21-year-old Phillip Phillips the season 11 winner. Yes, it's the fifth year in a row that a white guy won, but who's counting?

As usual, the "Idol" finale had something for everyone. Season three winner Fantasia joined third-place finalist Joshua Ledet (“Mantasia”) for a rollicking performance of Elton John’s classic, “Take Me to the Pilot.” Season five finalist Ace Young proposed to season three runner-up Diana DeGarmo, live on the "Idol" stage. And then there were the aforementioned performances from Rihanna, J-Lo and Aerosmith.

Good point but Phillips was dull and boring.

Yup. I really didn't care who won. That screaming though just gives me the willies. For some reason the judges love it.

My girls wanted Holly (the texas english little girl to win). I was bored watching the show.

You haven't been paying attention then if all you heard was the scraeming. Talk about '50s soul.

True. The times that Joshua sounded like he was screaming was just him singing a little sharp. If you don't know the difference and you aren't exposed to the style of music that a certain artist sings (Josh singing Soul for example) it's hard to know the difference between the two. He never screamed he just had a sharp note here or there but that's not unusual in soul music where the person sings from the heart instead of overthinking the music.

I would hear about 10 or 15 seconds of him then hit the mute. My girls didn't seem to mind because they didn't like his singing either. Actually, Holly made it quite good this year. I kept telling my girls she was going home.. Pleasantly she always got saved. If she would have left I doubt we would have continued to watch.

All that raaaa raaa raaa is for the birds. Jessica did it a bit as well. If you watched the "phone book" song they even teased him about it.

Joshua didn't scream. What sound like screaming from him was him pulling sharp while he was singing. Those moments he pulled sharp sound very similiar to screaming even though there is a huge difference.

Doesn't matter if it was sharp or flat or spot on. He just didn't do anything for me except make my ears hurt. When he sang we turned the mute on.

From a technical standpoint of singing it does matter. Pulling flat on notes like Phillip tends to makes someone often sound bored. Pulling sharp like Joshua does often makes someone sound like they're screaming when they are not. Now from a vocal preferance standpoint it doesn't matter how they technically sing because you like the style of voice you like. The only one I saw scream instead of sing this year was Skylar and she did it one song. I don't blame you for hitting mute when Joshua sang but it's a pity you missed some of the songs where he turned back the intensity vocals wise and let his silky voice just shine without going nuts.
  • smitty freakou... 2012/05/25 17:24:30

Nah.. It wouldn't have mattered anyway. I prefer classic music and jazz. The less singing the better. I would rather feel the music.

That makes sense. For you though it would matter if the music is well done. Personally I loved Phillip instrumental arangements but I didn't like his singing. Hopefully he has just instrumental tracks because I'd buy those. It when he sang that I didn't care for him. He's the type of guy I'd love to have in a band but I'd hate for him to be a solo artist because his strengths lie in compleamenting other people's vocals.

Perhaps. I haven't bought any music in ages. Some reason I don't find it worth the money. I am happy enough letting my phone choose random pieces.

Best season so far talent wise top to bottom in the top 12/13 finalists. However the result was completely wrong to make it a good season finale to a good season. Phillip was the worst singer in final 13 but he was a good guitar player. He wasn't as unique as most idiots think he was. Go to any bar or street corner in NYC and you'll find another Phillip Phillips. As far as AI goes, Phillip is just another WGWG and he is yet another person who won when someone else should have won a'la' Kris Allen or Taylor Hicks. Phillip got by on good looks and guitar playing because if we're voting on singing he would have been one the first to go. Jessica or Joshua should have won. Heck Colton or Skylar could have won it and it be legitimately a case of deserving to win. Plus there is the issue of Phillip's health problems. Jessica is the safer bet and more vocally gifted one and she'll be a star. AI seems fixed and even if it isn't it's just another example of a popularity contest.

I blame it on the teeny bopper factor.
They vote heart-throb instead of best singer.

I agree and the judges made it worse with their judging this year. They didn't give enough negative constructive criticism to balance the praise they gave contestant. About the only one they consistantly gave some negative criticism was Hollie which was a shame because she was also a good singer. Phillip who needed a bunch of constructive criticism was praised far too much. Thus the false teeny bopper love of some of the teeny boppers for Phillip. His usual performance face (which made him look like he was angry and constipated or bored or all of the above) was a no-no in music as any voice teacher would tell you. Then there are those few swing votes that went against Jessica because of how the judges handled the save option in such and unprofessional manner (saving Jessica was the right choice but it still doesn't excuse unprofessionalism in how you implement it). Between the teeny bopper voting for the heart-throb instead of the best singer & the poor conduct of the judges were the biggest factors at play.

Well it wasn't a drawn out over the top display of dog poop. American Idol was sooooo long and soooooo big, and when I say tight, and by that I mean the outfits on some of the performers. Yikes. The end was the best part when the winner was announced. I only wish they could have done that in a half hour show. Glee was a big disappointment for me and that leaves House, (I don't watch the others), I enjoyed it and I will miss it.

I wanted little Jess to win, but Phil-Phil has also been a favorite, since his Gotye duet with Elise, so congrats to both of the finalists!!

Anything but American Idol. Jessica or Joshua should've won, I'm sick of these no-talent WGWG's. Phil has a nice voice, but at best he's mediocre. But I can't really complain, all the people who get signed to the AI contract usually don't get big, some have even gotten dropped from the label. Plus, I saw it coming anyways. I swear, AI is rigged. Okay, done now :-)

Lol no. You seriously think 5 Dave Matthews in a row would win? If so, you may as well be insulting Americans by calling them stupid, they'd have to be out their
minds to find Phil more appealing than Jessica or Joshua. But AI never really was a singing competition, it's always been popularity. Jess and Joshua both would put Phillip to shame in a belting match.

yes I do think 5 white guys could win in a row. I'm not gonna lie, I liked Phillip but I didn't like the last 4 guys to win; Lauren should've won over Scotty, Crystal should've won, either David was pretty good but Cook had it in the bag, and we all know Taylor Hicks was stupid but he was better than watching the stiff Kat McPhee perform. No I don't think AI is rigged. There have been so many reports that the producers want a girl to win since the last one was Jordin Sparks. There are rumours that the stunt with Jessica at the bottom was a strategy to get the judges to use the save so if a popular guy got in the bottom he would go and she wouldn't have much competition.

You can't really blame it on the contestants themselves. A lot of my friends told me that when they tried to call for Phillip and Joshua the phone lines weren't working and that night Jessica was saved first, if anything the producers were trying to make it so Jess would win. Then Jessica didn't have a very good winner's song whereas Phillip did but they were the ones who chose the song themselves and the producers probably thought that the popballad would do better in music sales for Jessica and led her to that type of song, then throughout the whole competition the judges sucked at the their job and didnt dist...

AI needs to reboot and go back to how it was in the begining. It wasn't always about the popularity, Kelly Clarkson was clearly the most talented one and she rightfully won the first season. After Carrie Underwood there's no one who has had a big impact on music like these two or at least not a winner.

You can't generalize either saying that Phillip wasn't good. He had some bad moments but he was entertaining. I know grown people who voted for him throughout the season and they like the type of music that he has to offer, even J-Lo said you couldn't really compare the two and I felt like that was the first thing that I could agree with her in this season. Some people prefer belting out like Beyonce but there are some of us who like the easy laid back vocals like Phillip does. Either way I would've been happy with either one winning the past has shown us that contestants don't need to win in order to make it in the industry.

What you said was interesting, but didn't they save Jessica in the Top 6 week? After then, the judges can't use a save, so even if they didn't save Jessica, a guy would've gone home after her anyways. I agree thay Kelly and Carrie were very talented, but imo Phillip just wasn't entertaining. And Phillip had a whole marching band for his song "Home", and all Jess did was sit on a piano for "Change Nothing". Maybe Phil requested a band and Jess only wanted a piano, but honestly I think they were trying to make Phil the star from the very beginning. When I saw his audition episode I knew they were making him seem special. I just knew he was going to be in the Top 4. Just look it up on YT, they were constantly bragging on him, and I did like him then, but I would've liked it better if Hollie Jessica & Joshua made it to the Top 3. But I think all 4 of them have a decent career ahead them.

They could have rigged the judging of the top 24 and nobody would be the wiser. Only contestant to get constant negative criticism was Hollie. Phillip, Joshua, and Jessica were the only ones to get gushing praise with no negative criticism. Even if the voting wasn't rigged the judging could be. AI needs rebooted with new judges and a new format. The voting needs to be a weighted one with 80% America and 20% judges. There needs to be 4 judges with two of them being voice teachers, one of the being a music star, and the last one being the guest mentor for that episode.
