American Apparel may have offended the wrong woman...
The oft-controversial company last
month launched a 'next big thing' competition to find a U.S. size 12-14
model, encouraging women to present photos of their bodies for a public
vote.
But one woman was so
insulted by the company's approach that she has entered the competition
in her own parodying style - submitting photos of herself gorging on or
surrounded by stereotypically high-calorie foods.
Her spoof entry has been so successful that she may even win the poll.
'My
name is Nancy Upton. I'm a size 12 and wanted to show American Apparel
my fresh face (and full figure),' her Tumblr site, dedicated to her
competition entry, reads:
'I just can't stop eating.'

I'm a guy, and I am 100 pounds overweight. I don't care about my "looks" but its really affected my health. People who hide behind the "big is beautiful" argument disappoint me. Your beautiful either way, but please think of your well being first. I'm doing my best to lose weight because its UNHEALTHY TO BE OVERWEIGHT.
that being said, all these so called "models" who are all skin and bone sadden me as well. If they think the need to starve to be beautiful they are dead wrong.
Girls, please, be healthy. Healthy is attractive too. And believe me, im a dude and im working on it too. I know some people like "squishy and hug-able bears" but that doesn't mean im going to neglect my health if i can help it.
obesity is a problem. Not because of looks, but because of health. ad campaigns that try to sell you on the idea the being over or under weight is a good thing are wrong. Its nice to try and be positive about your looks, but convincing yourself to stay unhealthy isn't right.
Meat on your bones is fine. Heck, i like a little tubby tummy in a girl. But it sounds to me like their message is "being fat is fine". Its not. I'm obese, and i can say from experience that its havoc on you health.
her entry was social commentary, remember "i am big because i love food" she told the world she would rather have a good meal than be a size 00.
she did showcase her confidence in her size- otherwise why would she do so many nudes exposing every curve and spot of cellulite.
the open letter was an more insulting than the entry:

as was another comment by the company in regards to April Flores:
"April Flores, who was seeking out pieces for a plus-sized clothing line, was told by an AA rep that they didn't carry plus-sized items because "that's not our demographic."
