Tell us if you've ever read this headline before: "Team loses game. Star player injures hand after punching glass, fire extinguisher." Chances are, until Monday night, a headline like that would have never crossed your mind. Now it's in the minds of every single New York Knicks fan, and it's currently the butt of jokes throughout social media.
The Knicks lost Game 2 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals to the Miami Heat by a final score of 104-94. It was a hard fought game, but ultimately, like Game 1, the end result was the same. And while there's not necessarily moral victories in sports, Game 2 certainly wasn't an embarrassing blowout like Game 1 was.
It's bad enough the Knicks have had to deal with injuries throughout this year, among Jeremy Lin, Amar'e Stoudemire, Baron Davis, Iman Shumpert and others. Now it looks like they'll lose an important member of their team yet again. Only this time, the injury is due to stupid, rather than just plain bad luck.
After the Knicks' Game 2 loss, Stoudemire punched a glass casing that contained a fire hydrant. He reportedly injured his hand, needed stitches due to several lacerations caused by the punch, and was even caught on camera walking out of the Heat's home arena in a sling. Uh-oh. Sources tell ESPN that Stoudemire may not just be out for Game 3, but possibly the rest of the playoff series. Stoudemire apologized on Twitter without going into details, but it may be too little, too late for him -- and for the Knicks' playoff hopes this year.
