Alex Pettyfer Signs On To Lee Daniels's The Butler image

Alex Pettyfer is the start of Steven Soderbergh's upcoming film Magic Mike,
though you wouldn't know it from the trailers, which rightly emphasize
this year's breakout star Channing Tatum. And Pettyfer, to be honest,
probably seemed like a better bet as a star a year and a half ago,
before both Beastly and I Am Number Four opened to the
kind of bad reviews and lackluster box office that don't exactly scream
"A Star is Born!" Still, he got Soderbergh to take a chance on him for Magic Mike, and that might be what's now leading to more work, with another Oscar-nominated director no less.

Deadline reports that Pettyfer has joined the cast of The Butler, the upcoming film from Precious
director Lee Daniels that features a massive cast in telling the story
of Eugene Allen, who served as a butler in the White House for 50 years.
Pettyfer's Magic Mike co-star Matthew McConaughey recently dropped out
of his commitment to play JFK in the film, but don't worry, Pettyfer
isn't planning to fill those shoes. Instead he'll play a young man who
has a pivotal encounter with Allen early on in the butler's life.

Like most of the rest of the cast of The Butler, save Forest
Whitaker in the title role and Oprah Winfrey as his wife, Pettyfer's
screen time will likely be short. But he's in good company, with Alan
Rickman, Jane Fonda, David Oyelowo, Minka Kelly, Cuba Gooding Jr., Lenny
Kravitz and Terrence Howard all set for roles, and Vanessa Redgrave
apparently in talks as well. Shooting is set to begin in New Orleans
this July.
