I should think that these two characters need no introductions. Though they faced off in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, it was implied that Dumbledore wasn't actually trying to kill Voldemort during that battle. Whether that was simply because he knew that as long as the horcruxes existed Voldemort couldn't be killed or for some other reason isn't entirely clear. But for the sake of this, let's assume that Voldemort had no horcruxes remaining and it was a full-on duel to the death between the two most powerful wizards in the history of the Harry Potter universe.

Who would win? Light or dark? Dumbledore or Voldemort?

In JK's world she has made it clear that love is more powerful than power. Dumbledore has so much love and respect on his side vs Voldemort's want of power and the fear his people had of him. Since Voldemort's people turned on him and left him in his fight against Harry, they likely would have done the same in a battle against Dumbledore.

He basically had Voldemort killed during their fight when he got him caught in the sphere of water, until Harry the dumbass had to freaking walk forward and make Dumbledore lose his concentration allowing Voldemort to escape.

He didn't give into the darker magic that he knew would make him strong. Because magic in that universe seems to be based on will power as well as knowledge, being able to withstand some of the strongest magic in existence makes him more powerful.

Pfft! They're both morons who go off on huge elaborate plans that backfire! Voldemort killed Snape whole killed Dumbledore who was tortured by Harry, so Harry must win since he's the only one still alive!

You mean the battle that wouldn't have happened if Dumbledore was upfront and honest? It isn't saving someone when you endanger them in the first place. Its called covering your ass. So name a time Dumbledore saved Harry?

Obviously Dumbledore has many other things going on. If he didnt provide all the information at the round table discussion and the kids went all active gung ho ... how is that Dumbledores problem?

Hmm... 5 moments to say, hey Harry let me get you a competent teacher of occlumency, and then I'll tell you about the worthless prophecy! That's really hard work. Dumbledore had a lot on his plate? Yes, he did, screwing up a kids life takes up a lot of his time. I asked for an example of when Dumbledore helped Harry, really helped him?! And not arriving after the fact, after having put him in danger like in the ministry either.

while I agree it would have been nice if he would have taken more of an interest in HP, at the same time he couldnt even keep a Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher employed for more than a year.

Yeah, because of a jinx that can be gone like getting rid of the class and replacing it with something near the same but different. You still haven't said what he's done for Harry, anything, it doesn't have to be life saving, just anything good he's done for Harry? One thing for the boy he supposedly cared about.

Alright .... obviously you are going to push this issue.
He believed in Harry and gave public testament to it, when everyone else denied what Harry saw. He was even removed from his job because of it.

Given his power in the wizarding world do you think he couldn't have protected himself! He could have also protected Harry at the same time; he was head of so much, do you really think that Fudge, a moron could ever outdo Dumbledore if he didn't want it? Dumbledore had NEVER had faith in Harry surviving without him. He treated Harry like a fool, always, and tortured him! I still ask you what Dumbledore did for Harry? One, tiny good thing that helped him, really helped him!?

I just gave you the event.

By Dumbledore recognizing that he served as the headmaster of Hogwarts because an appointment, and accepted he was being removed instead of fighting Fudge you deem that inaction. Why was he fired? Because he stood up for Harry and accepted the fact that Voldemort had returned. Nobody wanted to believe it and they fired Dumbledore.
It cost him his job but ... he believed in Harry. What more could he have done? Removed him from school to go on a Voldemort hunting expedition?

Dumbledore is Dumbledore head of this that and the other, including the ICW (International Confederation of wizards). If he gave a crap he could have used not only his positions, but the law against Fudge, which is what I said in lesser words up there. Dumbledore has tormented and tortured Harry since he was fifteen months old, and the treatment had only gotten worse. Looking, NOBODY had ever stood up for Harry's rights, especially not Dumbledore, Dumbledore did the opposite!

Hearsay from the author who created both characters. Let's try to be serious, shall we?
  • Merlin Fanghur 2013/05/30 22:43:37 (edited)
    Merlin
No, hearsay from the characters! The author said nothing. She wrote the characters saying that. You're not thinking of how it is as if the characters were real, which is how anybody making a choice should. And even if JK says differently, if its not written into the story? Well it must only be interpreted from the books only! Otherwise that would be like Stephanie Mayer suddenly coming out and saying, oh, but Bella really is a strong interdependent woman, or Edward isn't a stalker even though we all know that's a lie.

If you look at the way the Slytherin's in Hogwarts (most) treat muggle-born's like crap and think of them as scum, by your reckoning, because JK wrote that in, even though its obviously not true, it must be true though?

I am being serious. JK also wrote in that Voldemort was a great wizard, and his Death Eaters think of him as the greatest to have lived. Lets not forget all of those Dumbledore has control over and their biased on that matter, as well as others biased. We mainly have everything from Harry's POV, and he's been held back every which way so he takes what he can get, and even then on really important matters he's left in the dark.
