We're so psyched -- and a little bit shocked! -- that Melissa McCarthy received an Oscar nomination Tuesday morning for her hilarious, raunchy role in "Bridesmaids." But other celebs were not so lucky.

Like Leonardo DiCaprio, who was snubbed in the best actor category for his role as an aging, sexually repressed J. Edgar Hoover in "J. Edgar." DiCaprio won praise and a Golden Globe nod for the role, but critics were mixed on the movie (and the makeup).

Bad-ass "Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” heroine Rooney Mara scored a best actress nod, but director David Fincher was ignored (the movie was also left out of the best picture category). And George Clooney praised his, er, "gifts" at the Golden Globes, but Michael Fassbender was left out of the best actor category for his buzzy role as a sex addict. What a "Shame."

DiCaprio is always snubbed. He is underrated in Hollywood and deserves way more recognition than he is given.

I'm also annoyed that Harry Potter was snubbed. It was better reviewed by critics than any of the nominees in the Best Picture category.

Btw, Cars 2 was terrible and should never have been made considering how good the first one was.

War horse- an epic film and 1 of my top 5 favourite childhood books. All we need is a film adaptation of "The Name of the Wind" by Patrick Rothfuss, and I'm in film heaven!

I don't know what DiCaprio ever did to piss off the Academy but he is constantly overlooked year after year. I don't know what they look for when deciding what movie or who to nominate but that's why I quit watching this awards show years ago. Marlon Brando had the right idea when he won Best Actor for the Godfather. The whole show is
    a joke.

Since "Titanic," a movie in which I thought he sucked, Leonardo DiCaprio has grown into a fine actor. It's hard to believe he that wasn't nominated for playing the lead role in "J. Edgar," because he did a good job in making the character believable. However, as we all know by now, the Academy members are suckers for artsy-fartsy movies and the actors who star in them. That dude from "The Artist" has a virtual lock on the Oscar.

Fassbender is a snub to be sure, but he will have many other chances in his career. Swinton just won a few years back for MICHAEL CLAYTON, and deservedly so. Spielberg has plenty of Oscars on his shelf, and since he's the best living director in the world and will continue to make great films, he'll be nominated for films ultimately more deserving. Fincher made a supreme effort to have his remake of DRAGON TATTOO to be very anti-establishment, even going so far as to call it "The Feel-Bad Film of the Holidays". It wasn't meant to be an awards-show film, other than Rooney Mara. CARS 2 is the only Pixar film in many years not to be nominated, and justly so. It's not a good film. Leo is just one of those actors who, like Paul Newman, will not actually win for anything he might deserve it for (unlike Newman, I've never felt that Leo's put in an Oscar-worthy performance), but will win in many years for something he doesn't. That one is a real head-scratcher too. Usually, the Academy fawns over a performance that is mimicry of an actual person. Just go back over the last ten years and count how many wins have been for the portrayal of a dead famous person. But ultimately, the biggest snub thus year goes to DRIVE. It's the best pure cinema of the year, and Brooks' absence from the nominees is very noticeable and very wrong. It's the most compelling supporting performance of 2011. If Woody Allen all of a sudden decided to play a sociopathic killer, the Academy would lather praise until it eventually had to be hospitalized for lack of fluids. Brooks may not be as talented a writer/director as Allen is, but he's a far more talented performer. The only nomination for DRIVE is Sound Editing. That's criminal.

Honestly, I haven't been able to see anything this year, but a friend of mine went to see Drive and she said it was great. I'll take her word for it.
From what I've seen, I'm surprised Tintin didn't get nominated for Best Animated Movie. However, I am happy that Cars 2 wasn't nominated.
I also feel bad for DiCaprio. I genuinly like him.

Because we are becoming a military police state and banana republic and everyone is afreaid, more afraid than even the red scares because now there are much better surveillance techniques and powers and multiple blacklists of suspicious and perhaps unpatriotic people of all kinds instantly available at enforcement checkpoints.

    MUSIC!!!

Seriously, AMPAS? Only TWO nominations for Best Song? A lean year, yes, but there ARE more songs. Yet as usual, NO respect for music in the movies! In the last decade, this category has declined both in broadcast performances [abbreviated medleys to rush through - even tho they recently did an extended medley of NON nominated songs!?!] and in nominations / wins [two melody-less rap songs have won - c'mon, there are fifty music awards shows; THIS is the Oscars!]. Academy voters obviously confused the brilliant scene in Hustle & Flow where they showed HOW a rap song is constructed with the song itself being considered brilliant - which it is far from! Can anyone out there recall how it goes? It was just a couple years ago! Now hum Moon River.... Most of this problem stems from allowing those who AREN'T in music to vote in a category they nothing about. They don't allow it in other categories, so why MUSIC?

Seeing this disrespect depresses me. I still haven't gotten over "I Believe I Can Fly" and "Out There" from Disney's Hunchback - two of the best musical numbers from stage or screen in the last few decades - not EVEN being nominated in 1996! And this reminds me of a 60s album my radio DJ dad once told me about that featured great Oscar losers - every one a classic cherished melody that LOST the Best Song Oscar. Today, if the album was Great Oscar Nominees, none of today's winners could even replace one loser on that album! I'm just sayin'...

I don't disagree, I believe the morons in the Academy of Arts know zilch about music. Don't get me started on rap where some fool rhymes a verse with a bongo beat that amounts to a little above pathetic.Being a fan of R&B which used to be soul, I cannot understand how the black culture got into the rap crap thing, but it does not compare to the motown years and never will.
