We're so psyched -- and a little bit shocked! -- that Melissa McCarthy received an Oscar nomination Tuesday morning for her hilarious, raunchy role in "Bridesmaids." But other celebs were not so lucky.

Like Leonardo DiCaprio, who was snubbed in the best actor category for his role as an aging, sexually repressed J. Edgar Hoover in "J. Edgar." DiCaprio won praise and a Golden Globe nod for the role, but critics were mixed on the movie (and the makeup).

Bad-ass "Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” heroine Rooney Mara scored a best actress nod, but director David Fincher was ignored (the movie was also left out of the best picture category). And George Clooney praised his, er, "gifts" at the Golden Globes, but Michael Fassbender was left out of the best actor category for his buzzy role as a sex addict. What a "Shame."

DiCaprio is always snubbed. He is underrated in Hollywood and deserves way more recognition than he is given.

I'm also annoyed that Harry Potter was snubbed. It was better reviewed by critics than any of the nominees in the Best Picture category.

Btw, Cars 2 was terrible and should never have been made considering how good the first one was.

Maybe Woody Allen has the right idea. He won big for Annie Hall and did not bother attending the Oscar ceremony, preferring to play jazz with a Dixieland band in New Orleans that night. Hype, hope, snubs and sham. Pop culture makes too much of the Academy Awards.

Even though I didn't see J. Edgar, I would vote for any movie that Clint Eastwood directs...The man is a genius, but because he is a Conservative, the Hollywood liberal establishment just disregarded this man's tremendous achievements...but who cares, as he laughs his way to the bank..

But J Edgar was accurate in that socialists and commies would take over if not carefully weeded out. And here we are, after hollywood vilified him, we are at the brink of communism in America.

I know, we're so close to being Communist, right? Let's see all the Communist stuff that's passed in the last three years: a stimulus that was 40% tax cuts and $400 billion less than what economists said was needed to revive the economy, an individual health care mandate that the conservative Heritage Foundation came up with and that Republican presidential frontrunner Mitt Romney passed in his state, a two-year extension of George W. Bush's tax cuts, a follow-up of George W. Bush's Wall Street bailout, $1 trillion of spending cuts... did I miss anything?

I'm sure if J. Edgar were alive today he'd be railing about all these damn Communists who keep passing Republican policies.

Yes, that MUST be it. There can't be any other possible explanation. I guess that's why two of his films, UNFORGIVEN and MILLION DOLLAR BABY have won Best Picture in the last twenty years, and MYSTIC RIVER also receiving many nominations and actors like Gene Hackman, Morgan Freeman, Sean Penn and the woeful Hilary Swank have won Oscars for their work in those films, not to mention Eastwood himself winning Best Director. You're absolutely part of what's wrong with this country. You open your mouth before you think, spouting ignorance (or just blatant lies) to further fuel your meaningless agenda against Liberal Hollywood. Did it ever occur to you that maybe there were some better performances this year?

J Edgar sucked. It was a terrible movie based on defamations of a great American.

Dicaprio is mediocre as an actor.

'Dragon Tattoo' was amazing. I watched the original European version.

"Cars 2"? That movie got terrible reviews. I did not even see "J.Edgar" because it got bad reviews as well. But Michael Fassbender was phenomenal in the phenomenal "Shame", I am sure the only reason he got ignored was because the film is NC17. I really think "Drive" should have got a best picture nod as well especially when you consider "The Help" and "extremely loud and incredibly close" got nominations. Then you have "Beats, Rhymes, & Life: The travels of A tribe Called Quest" being snubbed for best documentary, "TinTin" for animated feature, and "50/50" should have got SOMETHING it was one of the more emotional films I saw all year.

This was a wonderful remake. With a killer soundtrack.

We Need To Talk About Kevin - i'm surprised she isn't nominated. She gave one of the best performances of the year.

Who ever voted Cars 2... Why? It was the worst Pixar movie ever, and was the most disappointing film of that year. It was a waste of time and doesn't deserve it's Pixar label, let alone to be nominated for an Oscar.

That's one of the reasons why I keep asserting that if you've won a certain amount of a given award (in this case, Academy awards) you cannot win any more. This way the competition is more fair and it's not the same people that win every year.

Di Caprio...has he won an Oscar yet? They usually only snub if they have one. The Oscar tends to gravitate towards obscure films. I also since my youth attributed that. to trying to elevate those with artistry not popularity. But at one time the two parameters were much closer. I noticed the best film often ends up being the most boring. They lost credibility when the technological film Avatar was snubbed.
  • Frank Wizard 2012/01/25 16:19:22

Is it all political? Mostly. But THE HURT LOCKER beating AVATAR, and Kathryn Bigelow beating Cameron wasn't so much political as it was actually deserved. AVATAR is visually stunning but has ZERO substance. It's a near-perfect popcorn movie because you don't have to listen; you just need to look. Whereas THE HURT LOCKER was not only a far superior film, but Bigelow directs it with a tremendous amount of flair and passion instead of relying on Cameron's nouveau-epic "If I throw $200 million at it, people will forget about the story" style. I agree that the Oscars are politically charged, but I defy anyone stating that THE HURT LOCKER was a merely political win.

Like when he played Mr. Rochester in Jane Eyre.
When she was leaving him, his voice just had so much emotion, and he even cried. My mom watched the mini-series of Jane Eyre when she was younger, and that Rochester didn't make you want to cry with him. He is just an amazing actor.
