A Twilight Reboot Is Probably Being Discussed, But Will It Ever Actually Happen?

Unverified rumors are like catnip for websites like this one, because
let's face it, they're fun. Even if you truly don't believe that
anything described in the rumor could actually happen, you get to play a
little Nostradamus for a while, pretending you can see into the future
and second-guessing the decisions that the studios or filmmakers in
question probably haven't even made yet. So let me admit up front, I
realize we're probably playing into the hands of the Internet rumor mill
by repeating what Bloody Disgusting is reporting with a stony, dead-serious face: Summit Entertainment is already making plans to reboot Twilight.
Now, the terms Bloody Disgusting uses are a little different, and more than a little hot-headed-- "they're already discussing it internally. It will happen. Twilight will return. It will never leave. It is eternal." And naturally, Summit has denied the report (but to Deadline,
weirdly): ”We are not remaking Twilight. We will happily support
Stephanie Meyer if she decides to proceed in any way. But this will be
the last one unless that should change.” Basically, that's the same
thing that Warner Bros. said about rumors of more Harry Potter
films, leaving it all up to J.K. Rowling, who has since pretty
definitively said that Harry's adventures are done. But Bloody
Disgusting is sticking by its story, noting that Lionsgate puts all the
agency on Stephenie Meyer, and since Meyer has apparently said publicly
that she wouldn't mind a reboot, that still makes just about anything
possible.
The thing about "studio discussing X" rumor stories is that they're
almost always true, to some degree. Movie studios are in the business of
making money, and if they have something successful, you'd better
believe there are executives sitting there right now, trying to figure
out how to stay in business with that golden goose. What becomes
important is the difference between what's being talked about-- pretty
much anything-- and what actually gets made. And as much as Summit would
love to keep making that Twilight cash, a full-fledged reboot of the series seems mighty unlikely any time soon.
I'd much rather put my money on some kind of TV series, maybe focusing
on lesser characters in the books, and airing on the CW (Lionsgate,
which recently bought Summit, does have a healthy TV production side).
But really, right now we're just speculating the same way the Summit
execs are. So if you're one of the few Twilight fans who speaks up on this site from time to time, what do you want to see? It's open season on ideas, apparently!
