Somebody must have realized that they could cash in on that controversial Time magazine cover. TV production company Collins Avenue (makers of "Dance Moms" and "American Stuffers," is developing a reality show about mothers who breastfeed older children, the New York Post reports.

breastfeeding

The health benefits of breastfeeding (for mom and baby) are well known, with most doctors recommending exclusive breastfeeding for at least the first six months of a child's life and then breastfeeding while supplementing with food for at least the second six months. The World Health Organization encourages nursing until at least age 2.

But somehow, the sight of a mom breastfeeding a child over two tends to freak people out, even though the medical advice is mixed on when you "should" stop. "Experienced pediatricians realize that the benefits of breastfeeding don’t just magically disappear after one year," Karen McGratty, a lactation consultant who is nursing her 3-year-old son, told the Post.

"I didn’t set out to nurse a 3-year-old," mom Jessica Cary told the Post. "But two years came and went. Now breastfeeding and mothering are so intertwined for me." Are you interested in learning more about moms who can't give up breastfeeding? Or not in the slightest?

Breastfeeding has become the new vehicle for women with exhibitionist tendencies.

I can pee 5 meters away from the toilet but you don't see me on reality TV showing everyone do you?

It's so stupd how some women insist on breastfeeding and treat anyone who dosn't as being worse than Hitler, but have strict cut-off points as to when it becomes inapropriate.

Definitely, worst show ever. Imagive growing up, and still feeding from your mother's breast. You remain in someway immature, and it's painful for her, as she will be out of breast milk.

I don't think the show should be on 'older' children who are still breastfeeding but should be on mom's who are just getting started. It would be great advocate for breastfeeding. This is how most babies were fed before the invention of formula. I think if more people were informed about the great advantages of breastfeeding, it would become the 'norm' again and we as a country would start to see the health care benefits from it. I think we would/could become a healthier nation....less obesity, heart disease, cancers, etc. The show can be done without the women showing their breasts! If we can put a show on about idiots like 'Jersey Shore', then why not this, which is so much more beneficial for our children.

Your idea is a good one, but it has nothing at all to do with this poll, or the show that is being developed. Maybe you should have read the question more closely before voting.

We DON'T need a show about any of it. As for your idea, women already know b/c it's shoved down our throats. And if there is a woman alive who hasn't heard the breastfeeding is better mantra than believe me when she becomes pregnant she will hear it from almost EVERYONE!! Society, like any kid over the age of 1, needs to get off the breastfeeding train already.

I just don't understand Puritans. If, for example, you are a Christian you should see nothing wrong with this natural, God intended use for the mammary glands. Nudity? God made us that way, and got pissed when we were ashamed of how He created us.

Did you even read the question (let alone the entire article) before casting your knee-jerk vote? It isn't about whether breastfeeding is good. It is about whether it is good to breastfeed children as old as 7 or 8 years old. (Hint: it ISN'T good)

I think a show about breastfeeding is a GREAT idea. However, i have a feeling that this show is gonna go the way of the TIME magazine cover. They're going to choose the breastfeeding nazis who coddle their child more than the REAL moms out there who don't put down others because of their choices because they don't want to be put down because of the ones they've made. This is going to nothing more then solidify the fact in the rest of the world's mind that extended breastfeeding is a bad idea. Focus on first time mothers who are breastfeeding for the first time. Choose five. Ones who have little support and ones who have lots of support. See how much support their hospitals give. Then see who succeeds and who doesn't. This is the reality of breastfeeding. Not the moms who've been doing it for two years. This is what the people really need.

Breast feeding is the best thing for a baby and more information should be made available to people. With that said, I am tired of all the reality shows and to have shows about all this stuff is a sure cure to all that want to quit watching TV or buy cable.

It is natural and natures way. When breast feeding became popular again in the USA Nestles started shipping baby food to third world countries. Those poor people were duped into believing that the fomular was the reason American babies did so well, Unfirtunately they also thought they could make it last longer by adding more water. The outcome was more under weight and sick children but Nestles made money still. There is nothing more important than profit.

Some people need to learn what is perfectly normal to do, babies only. The TV is the greatest influence. Soy and cow's milk is not normal to feed a human baby. Mother's milk is the best. After a year and a half forget it. Mom's feeding older kids have something wrong with them, or their sex life is not happening. Moms can pump themselves if they feel the need to give their older children breast milk. Was this show on the taboo channel?

I think it would be better though to focus on first time moms. The ones that are struggling with it. Show the reality of breastfeeding so that people know it's hard in the beginning but if you keep with it you'll be rewarded in the end. I don't think people are going to learn much or want to breastfeed by watching a bunch of women who are breastfeeding their two year olds and up. I don't have a problem with it myself but you know for a fact they'll choose the most controversial women they can find. Not the moms who really want to better the world.

Any woman breastfeeding a two year old (and up) is gonna be controversial. The reason being...it's gross. By 2 (and up) a child can take his/her milk via bottle or sippy cup like a normal person. As a side note, whenever they show pictures of this they usually show older BOYS. I would be curious to see the statistics on how many Mothers practice this inappropriate behavior with their daughters. I bet not nearly as much as they do with their sons....but that's just my theory.
  • ixithed... Happy21... 2012/09/03 15:31:54
    ixithedustkeeperixi
The only thing that makes it innappropriate is that most people view the breast as sexual... for a mother feeding her 2 year old (which the WHO reccomends to breastfeed till at LEAST age 2 because of important antibodies that a mother can pass to her child through breastfeeeding) doesn't see her breast as sexual and neither does that 2 year old child. As a woman who breastfed her daughter (not that long though, she weaned herself when she was ready) there is nothing sexual about it. It's the same as putting a bottle in my baby's mouth. A woman is feeding her child. That's that.

With all due respects it's perfectly normal to have sex but we don't need a TV show about it.

Call me a prude but somewhere along the line I feel people lost the idea of what really needs to be displayed in public. I'm not a fan of PDA (Homo or Hetero). Yes it should be perfectly acceptable for a woman to breastfeed in public. Let's have some discretion though. This should be a very personal interaction between mother and child. I cannot understand the mentality of a person who would want a camera crew following them around during such a time.

Like I said... I would rather it be about a young mother just starting out with breastfeeding and how she's struggling with it. I don't think one about extended breastfeeding is going to work... and if TLC is doing one it should be focused on educating others about breastfeeding.

When the child gets teeth and can handle solid food, it is time to get off the breast.
  • ixithed... John T. 2012/07/11 15:58:29

What do you give them then in place of the breastmilk? Formula? Cause my daughter could handle solids at six months but it's reccommended that she keeps getting my milk until she was 1 year old. Do we take a child off of a bottle completely when they can handle solids? No. Educate yourself on what's actually reccommended by our health professionals before making a comment about it.
  • Happy21... ixithed... 2012/07/12 02:50:26
    Happy212121
I get that you wanted to brag about how YOUR daughter was eating "solid" foods at such an earlier age but all that really does is just prove that she could NOT wait to get off of your nipples. Sometimes it's okay to follow your children over the doctors. Take your cue from her. If she is ready for a chicken breast instead of yours than so be it. Now get her cute little chubby ass some gravy and a CUP of Mommy's freshly pumped milk.
