A Reality Series About Moms Who Breastfeed Older Kids Is in the Works: Great Idea, or Worst Show Ever?

Somebody must have realized that they could cash in on that controversial Time magazine cover. TV production company Collins Avenue (makers of "Dance Moms" and "American Stuffers," is developing a reality show about mothers who breastfeed older children, the New York Post reports.

breastfeeding

The health benefits of breastfeeding (for mom and baby) are well known, with most doctors recommending exclusive breastfeeding for at least the first six months of a child's life and then breastfeeding while supplementing with food for at least the second six months. The World Health Organization encourages nursing until at least age 2.

But somehow, the sight of a mom breastfeeding a child over two tends to freak people out, even though the medical advice is mixed on when you "should" stop. "Experienced pediatricians realize that the benefits of breastfeeding don’t just magically disappear after one year," Karen McGratty, a lactation consultant who is nursing her 3-year-old son, told the Post.

"I didn’t set out to nurse a 3-year-old," mom Jessica Cary told the Post. "But two years came and went. Now breastfeeding and mothering are so intertwined for me." Are you interested in learning more about moms who can't give up breastfeeding? Or not in the slightest?

Breastfeeding has become the new vehicle for women with exhibitionist tendencies.

I can pee 5 meters away from the toilet but you don't see me on reality TV showing everyone do you?

The only options for answering are complete extremes, neither of which expresses how I feel about the subject. For those who get squeamish or freaked out about breastfeeding in general, grow up. It's literally the most natural thing in the world. We're called 'mammals' for a reason. How and when and where and how long a woman breastfeeds her child is completely up to her. I see nothing wrong with a child being breastfed until they're 4, 5, 6...whatever. If that's what a mother decides is best, how can I, or anyone else, criticize that, really? As for being a good reality show, I can only say that 95% of all reality shows are idiotic wastes of time. I wouldn't go out of my way to watch a breastfeeding show.

Even as much as I love boobs, Watching women breat feed the little rug rats isn't sexy or good television. Now if it was just about boobs... well, I'd watch that and record it and buy the blu-ray discs of that series.

I'm not going to waste an hour of my life staring at a screen watching some stranger breastfeed her child. In the words of my aunt, "that just doesn't sound like my cup of tea."

I can see the "dear lord help me" in that boys eyes in the second picture. It looks like she is shoving his face in her boob and he's embarrassed to be shown like that on a magazine.

first of all its awkward breastfeeding your child over the age of them needing to be...especially if they are eight or so, and second of all the picture below is REEEAALLLLYYY weird (i hope thats not an actual magazine) and third of all WHY do we even need to know see this on reality tv? without them covering up either. its just weird.

Breastfeeding should stop once you're able to actually eat food. After that, it's just creepy. And I know it may not be intentional for these ladies but in my mind it's kind of.. creepy, molestation, weird. I can't help but to think the mom's want it for their own pleasure.. I may be wrong but that's just what I think. Who wants their kid going to school telling their friends and teachers that their mommy still breastfeeds them? How embarrassing. I would never watch a freak show like this.

As a woman who is planning to be a Mom whenever Nature gives the 'Ok', I'm all for breastfeeding and have looked into it comprehensively, spoken with my Dr about it and such so I have a good 'library' of info to work with when the time comes.
As for Nursing my child and how long for, that's between me, my child and Husband. He's also aware of the benefits to Mom & Kid so he's on-board with extended Nursing based on the facts. He could care less what society thinks as the welfare of myself and our child come priority-one in his eyes.
    BUT...
I don't really think a show is necssary about Mom's practicing extended Nursing.
Smells like a grab for easy money based on controversy that shouldn't even exist really.
