Man Spies on Computer Thief via Apple's MobileMe Program

Apple's MobileMe programs enables users to sync computers with one another. In a recent report on an ongoing investigation, a man who requested to be called 'Jim' explained that after his home was broken into and his two Macs and PC were stolen, he went out purchased a brand new Macbook Pro.

Because Jim had backed up his data on a Time Machine, Jim was able to restore all his data. Luckily, that included Apple's MobileMe program, which automatically located and synced with one of Jim's stolen Macs.

From there, Jim was able to use a screen-sharing function that allowed him to bring up the other computer's screen. Jim watched as the suspected thief searched for winning lottery numbers. When the mouse stopped moving on the other computer, Jim remotely took control of the computer and acquired an IP address.

The next day, while the thief applied for a job online, Jim took down a Social Security Number, address, and telephone number.

Although police investigating is still underway, there's no doubt Jim will be reacquiring his stolen computers.

I don't know how the syncing process works but I'd assume that the manufacturer has records of info on each machine to be able to do this remote viewing (spying) any time that they (or anyone they designate) choose. Again, I'm speaking from ignorance, but I believe that anything is hackable - including the syncing process.

The government can already enter your house and examine the contents of your computer without a warrent. This just makes it sooo much more convienient.

I assume that the syncing process would make it possible for someone to plant files or photos one someone else's computer without their knowledge. Could this be why some otherwise upstanding people are being arrested for kiddie-porn?

I assume that if the computer has a webcam that this can be used as well as just accessing the files on the remote computer.. If you have a high-speed link it's never really "off", so don't be walking around naked in front of your computer. You might be giving some hacker geek a free show!
