Global Demand of Diamonds Down: Have consumers worldwide have finally realized that diamonds are worthless?

SenorBabyMan May 12, 2009 18:50:58

One of the most expensive type of jewelry a women could get, has been affected the most thanks to the global recession. The demand for diamonds, has dropped the highest than any other gems. The world's famous diamond producer, De Beers, has nothing to do with all the diamonds that are for sale so the company is wrapping all the diamonds and locking them up in a vault. Have consumers worldwide have finally realized that diamonds are worthless?
Yes. Consumers worldwide have finally realized that diamonds are worthless.

Diamond mines in Russia, (Alrosa) and Africa (De Bers) are stockpiling diamonds right now so that they can drive prices up for the rest of us. Makes me wonder if diamonds are available in abundance but they are only holding out on us. That's why I like lab created sapphires.

They will always be precious stones if for no other reason than their superior place on mohs scale of hardness

I really wish you would have put none of the above. Most diamonds in the world are blood diamonds. Thats the slavery, poor condtions and starvation most workers go through. Canada has finally started their diamond business without the slavery and ALL of their diamonds are marked so you know they are NOT blood diamonds.

Things are only worth what people agree they're worth, and when people don't have money, necessities prevail. I don't think they're worth blood, ever, and I think ending the American import of blood diamonds was one of the Bush Administrations finer decisions.

Also, I find pearls to be a more attractive adornment.

Worthless or not I love my diamonds and if I get the chance I will put two to four diamonds in my dinner ring which started to be my engagement and wedding set and I had the diamonds put into a dinner ring and the left over gold was styled into a nugget. Love those diamonds

Maybe if I had LOTS of glass to cut, I'd buy one. Gold /Silver/platinum, are better investments.

Well, diamond are expensive. They are still beautiful and necessary. Diamonds are the strongest material and that's why they are very useful.

Which is more important to buy? Food, or pretty baubles? I vote for food - a far more pleasing belly filler, you think?

Something is worth whatever people are willing to pay for it. I think the main purpose of a diamond is to advertise to the world that "someone is willing to spend a lot of money on me".

Basically, DeBeers held the diamond trade hostage for more years than I'd like to think about. The new man-made diamonds are far harder than mined diamonds and much less expensive...takes a trained eye to see the difference. I'm all for the diamond industry going bust....so much for blood diamonds...personally I'd rather have a pigeon blood ruby anyday (far more expensive than diamonds).

They are purty but they are worthless as far as resale value goes.

I still like my bling though! If I can afford it, then I get it. ;-)

On a serious note though, I would rather buy gold...stocking up on it for many reasons..one of them being that it's shiny. *wink*

No. Diamonds are beautiful, but consumers can't afford it.

Worth is a concept invented by humanity, and thus objects are only worth what we *say* they are worth.

Diamonds are a precious resource, to be sure. Their density and natural hardness make them great augments for tools, for example.

Other than that, they really are just worth something because there's not alot of them on the market (though there are alot of them in the mines) and because of their cosmetic beauty.

    Cheers.
