Just another tax imposed on us by the government, no matter what it is for, the money will be wasted

i respect your choice. please explain why this is for our own good & will it stop here?
isn't there other things out there more hazzardous to our health than sodas that the feds should be looking in to?

look at the multi billion cigarette lawsuits. it just made lawyers richer. it did nothing to compensate the victims or stop smoking.

it did raise cigarette tax revenues. that it did.

    Lawsuits did provide state revenue.

The cigarette lawsuits should not compensate the smokers (victims) and cigarette sales are down more than 40% since the lawsuits. These lawsuits have made us more healthy by reducing the number of smokers and educating the younger people to not even start smoking. Ad do you realize how much the states benefited from these lawsuits?

And yes lawyers made allot of money has they should in a capitalistic society.

As soon as you open the door to legislating "good for you" you get into some dangerous territory, especially considering everything can be "dangerous" it just depends on how you use it. Stupid idea. People absolutely have the freedom to make their own decisions about health.

they won't stop here. they'll go after fast food & junk food next. before you know it, all these industries will be taxed out of business. the public won't have nothing but more debts to show for it. anytime the feds say it's for our own good, be sceptical.

Taxes are meant to fund government not to bring about social change.

They'd never get this through in a law, it's absurd to use the tax code this way.

the fast food industry brings in 25% of it's total sales from beverage sales alone. this is bound to have an effect on their bottom line.

Separate issue - the question is about taxes, not fast food profits.

If you want to make an impact, give people who keep their weight under control a tax break. Encouraging healthy behavior is a better way to go.

tax increases on sodas will not stop people from drinking. they will just cut back in other areas like smokers & alcohol drinkers.

taxing sodas not only affect the beverage producers, but the ad marketing, distibution, transportation, supermarketing & the fast food industries as well. this translates into more layoffs. we can't afford any more layoffs.
