Question Business

Are pro-choice women who claim that "mens' opinions on abortion are irrelevant because they cannot give birth" sexist?

frere November 02, 2009 23:39:42

The quotes are just there to prevent the wording to become extremely confusing, but the question still stands.

I strongly advise all those in favor (especially women) of the "hell no" answer to google "faulty appeal to authority" before you make fools of yourselves.

Unbiased and unsexist (is that a word?) opinions are however accepted, for either side.

men have a right to voice their opinions, this applying especially to the fathers of the children, but it is ultimately the woman's decision whether or not to get an abortion.

women who say men should not even have an opinion on the subject are indeed being sexist and ignorant. if they should demand a man's support then they should also accept and support his opinions. every human being has the right to have an opinion on the treatment of other human life.

If abortion is a morally neutral life choice, then yes it does matter to some degree whether people with opinions on the matter can actually understand what the woman is going through.

If there is a moral issue with terminating innocent life (and I think there is), then it doesn't matter - anyone with sound ethical reasoning can have a legitimate opinion, man or woman.

As a side note, women seem to get the short end of the stick either way. If she has the baby, generally the burden falls almost completely on her; if she aborts the baby, the emotional and physical consequences fall completely on her. So in that sense, if a man is pro-life, he really ought to be the type of guy who also says men should actively help out with the new little life; otherwise, he's a hypocrite.

What I do with my body is my business. Now the father can hoot and yell, even break down and cry if he likes. But lets be clear here. I'm the one not him that will have to carry the baby for 9 months and go through labor. I was in labor 39 hours with my little girl. I don't expect any of you to have any idea what that's like, nor do I need you to feel sorry for me.

But that being said the first man that's done it can have his 5 minutes on the soup box...

Otherwise pay child support, sit down and shut up and please move out of my way!

My opinion means little. I'm not the one who would have to go through all the bodily changes with pregnancy.

well if it wasnt up to her....then it would be up to him. seeing as it is her body then ultimately the decision should rest with her. men dont make good single parents[of course there are exceptions]. suppose she had the baby..gave it to the father as agreed...and he failed miserably leaving her with the decision to become the parent[that she didnt want in the first place]..or she has to let social services take the child away. a woman can decide if she doesnt want to be a mother...but very rarely does she not take on that responsibility with flying colors when she has to.the instinct of a mother will take over even if she doesnt want it to.
it should be a womans choice regardless of the man.. however it should be a decision they both make. if he made her pregnant not knowing whether she wanted a child or not....well its his fault if she doent want to keep it. wear a condom or dont have sex with a woman who will abort. very simple.

It depends on the mans relationship with the woman. If its a husband, then it should be concidered. He cares for the woman, he would want whats best for her. But if its just some guy that had a one night stand and impregnated a woman, then his opinion matters less (Still matters, but doesn't hold that much sway in the matter), because he does not care for the womans well being. He would only care for the child support he'll have to pay.

It is sexist. As long as he wants to be a part of the child's life then I encourage that. Too many missing fathers.
