I had an interesting experience a few minutes ago. Just couldn't resist relating it to you.
I was returning home after my morning walk. It was a great morning for walking with a temp of 49 degrees. I was about to step inside our garage and noticed a hummingbird feeding on the feeder on our porch. I also noticed what looked like a leaf hanging down from the feeder on a spider web. I thought I'd walk over and remove the leaf from the feeder. As I got closer I recognized that the leaf was not a leaf but another humming bird, hanging up-side-down on the feeder. It appeared to be alive but asleep. Then I remembered that during cold spells when outdoor temps drop, hummers go into a torpor, where their body temp drops and they go into a temporary hibernation. I cupped my hands around the little rascal for about 7 or 8 minutes, hoping my body heat would warm the little critter up. The creature looked like a baby as it was somewhat smaller than the hummers I've seen around our home. While I was trying to warm the critter, another hummer which I assumed might have been the mother hovered around me, scolding me. She even landed on the feeder just inches away from my hands, while I warmed the baby. I finally pushed the tiny body into a perching position on the feeder. The little critter opened its eyes wide open. Its little heart was just throbbing as it pumped warmed blood thru its tiny body. I tried to pet the feathers behind its tiny head, sort of like a preening manner. The bird turned its head toward me and finally took off for the woods as if nothing unusual had happened.
Makes you wonder in awe of nature! We've had some very unusual experiences with the hummers here at "Hummer Haven."

Those Blues make an attractive picture. Thanks for sharing. I built some Blue bird houses this spring and had a couple that nested in one of them. We weren't lucky enough to see the babies leave the box.

Hey Hummer. . . I saw your post regarding SH "Names." I built a home in the mtns of north GA. It's called "Hummer Haven." Needless to say, we are "hummer friendly." We have some stained glass windows with hummers. The largest group of hummers we've had at one time was 30. They were feeding on 4 feeders that had had on our deck. We are the Hummer Nuts of the neighborhood!
