The Gospel in Hip Hop, Rap & Rhythm & Blues...

"Repent For The Glory of God!

This is the latest from The Plumbline, a Hip Hop & Rap group that is part of the fellowship of believers in Statesboro Georgia, where I have regularly attended since Father's Day of this year.

Church in the 'Boro has become a wonderful hodgepodge of Christians that don't fit anywhere else. We're not so "seeker-friendly" that we lose the glory of God's Word, but we're not strict on the "non-essentials," like how we dress...either.

(Yet, I wouldn't show up on Sunday morning in a bathing suit. Somebody is liable to throw a tablecloth over you to protect the men of the congregation because we believe that tells us not to "cause our brother to sin.")

"People Get Ready!" (Crystal Lewis)

I love the music of Crystal Lewis! I used to play her songs when I worked as a Christian radio DJ back in the 1980s. She has always been a strong woman that I have admired because of her ability to preach in song, and live the life! Enjoy! :)

"Thank You, LORD" (Mary Mary & Kirk Franklin)

Here are the program notes that good right along with this song on its You Tube page,...

"Jesus said "I am the way, the truth and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." John 14:6

1) Admit you are a sinner. See Romans 3:10
2) Be Willing to turn from Sin Acts 17:30
3) Believe that Jesus Christ died for you, was buried and rose from the dead. See Rom 10:9-10
4) Through prayer invite Jesus into your life to become your personal Savior. See Rom 10:13

What to pray:

'Dear God, I am a sinner and need forgiveness. I Believe that Jesus Christ shed His Precious blood and died for my sins. Please help me to turn from sin.
I now invite Christ to come into my heart and life as my personal Saviour.'

If you trsted Jesus as your Saviour, you have just begun a wonderful life with him.

*Read your bible (KJV) everyday to get to know Jesus Christ better
*Talk to God in prayer everyday.
*Be baptised, worship, fellowship and serve with other Christians in a church where Christ is preached
and the Bible is the final authority.
*Tell others about Jesus Christ."

"Wheels Of A Good Thing" (Bryan Duncan & The Nehosoul Band)

"Step By Step" (Bryan Duncan & The Nehosoul Band)

I have loved Bryan Duncan's music since the mid-1980s when I was the Christian radio DJ in Tallahssee, Florida, WCVC, 1330 AM. I even researched and picked up a couple of albums from his time with his original group, The Sweet Comfort Band! Great Music! :)

Anointed is a great brother and sisters trio that I first heard about twenty years ago, too. Most recently they provided the voice talent for three angels on Jonah, The Veggie Tales Movie, that was in theaters a few years ago. The three main angels are fairly good charicatures of the siblings. (My little girl and I always have to dance!)

"The God of Second Chances" (Anointed)

Finally, in the place of Honor, I feel that I must mention some of the all-time greats of the genre, Bebe & Cece Winans and Mavis Staples of that great family, The Staple Singers. This style of music is amazing, very up-lifting, and I am convinced very Christ-Honoring! Enjoy! :)

I'm sorry, it's not for me. I do not see how secular music with a few religious words can glorify God. Maybe it's just because that type of music just turns me off.

Bob, I really respect your viewpoint because I believe that if error is inevitable on this subject, then we should err on the side of restraint...never liberalism.

I have presented these particular examples of the genre because I when been aware of the lives of the artists and feel relatively confident of their message, their testimony, their music. (At least I'm about as confident of such things as a fallible human being can be.)

Frankly, living the Christian life is the proverbial tale of futility...were it not for the Hope of Heaven eternally. It really is hard to avoid all error, but every time the LORD brings a brother, like you, into my life, and I listen, then I usually avoid the most pitfalls.

At you words, I will meditate diligently on the subject of music! Please keep me in your prayers. Thanks... :)

I'm not trying to be a wet blanket here. If a person can be blessed by that kind of music then it's a good thing. The question one should ask themselves is, "Am I blessed and brought into a worshipful frame of mind by this music or am I just entertained?" If you are blessed, then that's fine. I just can't be.

I'm listening to the first one as I type...Awesome! I love rap....if has meaning....not really the mainstream any longer...The more this gets circulated the better for the young people of our world. I appreciate you bringing this to light....the positive side of this genre of music. It does bring those who are more prone to rap to Christ. Even God like's rap! LOL

This the first time I ever heard a RAP song that I felt was worth ANYTHING, and it is worth much, as it counters strongly all the other *rap music I ever heard. The other songs are just as beautiful in their worship.

I prefer hip hop and rap gospel as everyone calls it, because I like the beat.. but there are lots of groups that who really follow God in their songs, but I have also found some that dont really follow much of the gospels

Excellent Wisdom, Smiley! Discernment is required in every area of life! To spin a little bit of Forrest Gump wisdom just slightly, "Christian is as Christian does, but only if Christian does...from the heart!"

I have warned people that there are some pieces of classical music that should be avoided, like Mussorgsky's "Night on Balm Mountain" (which is a musical depiction of a Satanic mass.) Did you know that? Anybody? :)
  • raves +2   [-] ~Smiley~ (SHTPP~SHTHO) replied to WinBro777JOT...Hab. 2:1,20-3:2
I did not know that, and thank you
