Freedom and Inequality

raves +13   by Freedomwatcher
If men were like ants, there would be no interest in human freedom. If individual men, like ants, were uniform, interchangeable, devoid of specific personality traits of their own, then who would care whether they were free or not? Who, indeed, would care if they lived or died? The glory of the human race is the uniqueness of each individual, the fact that every person, though similar in many ways to others, possesses a completely individuated personality of his own.

It is the fact of each person's uniqueness — the fact that no two people can be wholly interchangeable — that makes each and every man irreplaceable and that makes us care whether he lives or dies, whether he is happy or oppressed. And, finally, it is the fact that these unique personalities need freedom for their full development that constitutes one of the major arguments for a free society.

Perhaps a world exists somewhere where intelligent beings are fully formed in some sort of externally determined cages, with no need for internal learning or choices by the individual beings themselves. But man is necessarily in a different situation. Individual human beings are not born or fashioned with fully formed knowledge, values, goals, or personalities; they must each form their own values and goals, develop their personalities, and learn about themselves and the world around them. Every man must have freedom, must have the scope to form, test, and act upon his own choices, for any sort of development of his own personality to take place. He must, in short, be free in order that he may be fully human.

In a sense, even the most frozen and totalitarian civilizations and societies have allowed at least a modicum of scope for individual choice and development. Even the most monolithic of despotisms have had to allow at least a bit of "space" for freedom of choice, if only within the interstices of societal rules. The freer the society, of course, the less has been the interference with individual actions, and the greater the scope for the development of each individual. The freer the society, then, the greater will be the variety and the diversity among men, for the more fully developed will be every man's uniquely individual personality.

On the other hand, the more despotic the society, the more restrictions on the freedom of the individual, the more uniformity there will be among men and the less the diversity, and the less developed will be the unique personality of each and every man. In a profound sense, then, a despotic society prevents its members from being fully human.

If freedom is a necessary condition for the full development of the individual, it is by no means the only requirement. Society itself must be sufficiently developed. No one, for example, can become a creative physicist on a desert island or in a primitive society. For, as an economy grows, the range of choice open to the producer and to the consumer proceeds to multiply greatly.Furthermore, only a society with a standard of living considerably higher than subsistence can afford to devote much of its resources to improving knowledge and to developing a myriad of goods and services above the level of brute subsistence.

"The freer the society, then, the greater will be the variety and the diversity among men, for the more fully developed will be every man's uniquely individual personality."

Very good article. The more freedom the more creative and developed man and society can be.

There is a bible verse that states something to this; "When the wicked rule the people morn, when the righteous rule the people will rejoice".

Today the wicked are ruling and we must replace them with righteous people. We can't do it by voting unless we have paper ballots that we can recount. Electronic voting machines count the votes the way the controllers want them counted. see http://blackboxvoting.org/

The wicked have so much control to day that it appears impossible to replace them but I assure you it is not impossible. They are blind and God will destroy them when we humble our selves, change our wicked ways and pray to our God that created us and the earth.

    What a great article.

Yes, we are all individuals with our own ideas. It sure would be one boring world if we all had the same ideas.

But isn't that what the Democrats and the Neocon Republicans are trying to do? Herd us like SHEEP and remove our Individualism.

We for one will NOT let this happen to us and our loved ones even if we have to take it to the next level.

If you have not signed the Letter to the GOP then click below and sign it. You are also advised to print the Letter out and mail it to the RNC. Our entire Family printed it out and mailed it in.

We can NOT support or vote for these SELECTIONS that the 2 Major Parties (really ONE since they are BOTH socialists) have FORCED upon us.

I am not quite sure what this article is referring to,,,,that we Americans save the despotic countries from their own ignorance, or that we Americans save our own society from a government "regime" that wants total control over our personalities and incomes.

I strongly favor freedom for all, but not at the suppression of my best interests. Exactly how much would anyone want for me to "give", since my value is not so great and I have already paid a heavy price via my lack to sustain on my own since the Clinton's left the White House. I have not been approached by one entity who is concerned about me, or my family and neighbors, as to just how they afford their bills after the extortion that has taxen place on pay day. I feel that I have been extorted to the nth degree, and enough is enough. While I must work 2 full time jobs to cover my housing, food, gasoline, health care and other necessities, others sit still and wait for the free monies our government gives away. If there are those whose governments are autocratic, then they need to intellectually figure out how to overcome that stalemate. Afterall, didn't our forefathers prove that a positive outcome is viable?

The American society offers free educations to the poor, while children from wholesome backgrounds must be able to afford private educations to avoid the lack of discipline and lack of respect for authority other groups impose on us. The American society offers free higher education to those who have proven their worth, but at the same time the people who are receiving tax dollars for free higher educations expect to be treated as equals, when the tax paying students and their families don't feel positive about the extortion of their personal worth. We have a stalemate in our own country, and although we can sympathize with the societies who can't sustain on an individual basis, I have to wonder why they feel entitiled to freebies. One thing I learned while studying the art of culture,,,,, mother nature intends for all civilizations to become extinct at some point in time. We are witnessing that in modern society and I truly feel we need to step aside and let that happen. What this produces is free and weightless movement into the future. Mortality is faced by all, even though none of us like that realtiy. Liberalism, socialism and marxism have no place in a society where the people are progressive.

movement future mortality realtiy liberalism socialism marxism society people progressive

Diane: Nice post but I do not see that: Mother Nature intends for all civilizations to become extinct at some point in time. I am open to how you learned this, I do not understand this.
What I see going on is; genocide going on created by a bunch of globalist and allowed to happen by God because of the people failing to follow the laws/Commandments of God.

Debates on freedom and equality have raged for years. My own take is that my freedom stops where it infringes on the freedom of another. We all are very self centered and therefore need government oversight and objectivity. I have no interest in another peoples equal rights if that person denies me my rights. I feel the special interest groups activities and the attention those groups have been given by the government have bent our society dangerously to the point of violent backlash. Calls for equality that cross the line to priviledge will create the next great societal problem for this country. The temptation to point to specifics is strong but I will save that for another poll.

if you ever noticed the majority of people do not want any freedom but what they have personally. they are content to let others take care of every detail of their surroundings and government. they are too complacent and only show signs of life if they are vaguely threatened with this loss. to let others think for them is fine with them.as long as they have their comfort zone they are happy.

Complacency. I view it as a scourge that has eliminated any ambition for achieving the American Dream.
