"It is the Soldier, not the minister
Who has given us freedom of religion.

It is the Soldier, not the reporter
Who has given us freedom of the press.

It is the Soldier, not the poet
Who has given us freedom of speech.

It is the Soldier, not the campus organizer
Who has given us freedom to protest.

It is the Soldier, not the lawyer
Who has given us the right to a fair trial.

It is the Soldier, not the politician
Who has given us the right to vote.

It is the Soldier who salutes the flag,
Who serves beneath the flag,
And whose coffin is draped by the flag,
Who allows the protester to burn the flag."

Obviously, liberty for all isn't as big of an issue to you as some of the others in politics right now. I am hetero, but is huge to me. It is certainly more important to me than making sure that the wealthiest 2% never pay their share in taxes or making the HUGE mistake of cutting spending early in recovery from a recession.

To me equal rights for all goes to the basis of every person in the country's liberty. Liberty for all MUST be for ALL or it evaporates for everyone. It can't be "liberty for all except for..." because the moment we accept the idea on an "except for" list none of us has any reason to believe that we won't eventually wind up on it. In this way a threat to anyone's liberty is a threat to my own. After all, what is liberty if it isn't the right to be different from the majority without being persecuted for it?

Gay marriage goes way beyond just marriage. It involves tax ramifications, hospital visitation right, inheritance rights, adoption rights and complications in raising an adopted child... it's way more than just wanting to get married. It's also government picking a side. It is government saying that gays are somehow lesser than the majority just for being gay. In the land of the free?!

Believing that you should not have the same rights as everyone else is oppression. People don't oppress who they respect.

If politicians pick their policy stance based on the opinion of just under three quarters of their base (and they'd be fools not to) then the 24% might as well not exist. They are a non-factor. The organization's candidate will still cast a 100% vote to make you a second class citizen in that regard.

The Pew data is based on several polls. The sample size is closer to 5 digits.

Regardless, obviously the decision is yours and I am sure that you have your reasons, but it is well established that the TEA party is predominantly social conservatives and their social policy stances are anti-you.

They support legislation to keep you from having the same rights as every other american. They can be friendly to you in person all you want, but as long as they are mostly socially conservative, they will support a platform which says that you should not be permitted to marry if you find someone with whom you would like to spend the rest of your life.

There is polling data showing it in the pew research poll base on TEA partiers' own responses to poll questions (2nd link), organized rallies against (3rd link), financial support to anti-gay candidates flowing from religious right anti-gay hate groups flowing to tea party candidates... 1,000 of them according to their own assertion (4th link).

If I remember correctly, you are headed for boot camp in the near future. Which one? I was at Lackland near San Antonio in 1972. My younger son at MCRD San Diego in 95 and my older one at Great Lakes about a year later. My father was at Fort Jackson back in the early 50s.

It is a family tradition going back to the 1860s. One ancestor campaigned through Virginia during the war and settled there after the war and raised a family. In his later years he held a reasonable amount of influence in Danville, Virginia.

Best to you in your military service!

I'm pleased to meet you Chris. I've seen quite a few raves from you and wanted to say "thank you." I retired from the Air Force in 1994. I see that you are in a military town now. Yes, there are a few in Texas. I've been through quite a few of them.

Hope to see you around. Best to you.
