About Me

I turned sixty this year which seemed weird at first, but I've grown into the problem of aging and it's okay. I'm glad to still be here. I feel about 35, and actually retain a lot of views from my 20s--you know those wonderful hippie years in the late 60s. I have a degree in English Lit. and a masters in Dance (modern dance). Taught all levels, including college. I retired and stayed home with two wonderful little boys who are all grown up now. I also am deaf but am greatly helped by hearing aids and do not sign because I want to live in the real world.

Reading, writing, gardening, flower arranging, playing Scrabble, walking, dancing (modern dance),

I love to read, especially books from Britain and Ireland, but also have favorite American writers like Dave Eggers and David Foster Wallace. My passion is the outdoor songbirds--I have about 6 feeders out all year, and running water (spring), heated birdbath (winter). I like hiking and surfing the internet, and keeping in touch with friends and family via the Internet.

iI am deaf so limited in what I can hear. Have never heard lyrics, so my loving husband has sung a kit fir me. I love old stuff--the Beatles, Simon & Garfunkle, Billy Joel, Leonard Cohen. But I grew up loving the classics--Mozart, Bach, Schubert, especially in chamber music, which I can hear better than symphony. I also have tinnitus that is so loud it can't be tested, so listening to music, is a passion I've had to let go of.

I grew up in the 50s and 60s and read the NYTimes at an early age, so didn't grow up ignorant of these things. I didn't know about this one, though, and how it brought resolve to our hero Rosa Parks. And I told you about my history teacher. He would teach with essays of this type so I was lucky. It never occurred to me that history would be sanitized, but Sparkley, who is younger than I, is in a better position to know. Yes, we almost indoctrinated our kids about the Civil Rights movement, McCarthyism, and the Holocaust. They went to Pa. high schools. Thanks for the post, Beautiful. (more)

Ah, this was Abraham Lincoln's philosophy from the day he entered politics, ingeniously mapped out his win of the White House, tried to manage the Civil War while his generals were less than able, until the day he died, two days after the war. He loved the theater, and rewarded himself and Mary by an evening out. (more)

No, there is no way to overemphasize this woman should really be baking cookies and browbeating her kids about abstinence. That's all she's fit for. I have never seen VP choices given much attention before, but with the oldest man ever running for the top spot, this is a very serious question. Goes to show you how little McCain cares about us--the nomination is all about him, and he appears to believe he's immortal. He must know she's inept, given the way they have tried to brainwash her. Her mouth spits out jargon and indecipherable gobleygook. Then they lock her up again and try new brainwashing techinques, which simply confuse her more. No one could get a book published as fiction based on this ticket. (more)

We don't really have all piles of oil Republicans claim will sustain us for a long haul--only a short haul. Speculators have become their sort of own OPEC. We need investment in alternative fuels--huge investment in the private sector since the government seems to be asleep on the job of research and deadline setting for reaching alternative fuel goals. I was 8 months pregnant and planting a vegetable garden outside when my husband called to tell me about the first release of radiation. On the second day, we called our dentist who told my husband to get me the hell out of here. We were already on the way to the Philadelphia airport when the governor asked pregnant women to leave to vicinity. My husband, who was lead attorney for the state in Worker's Compensation, had to stay behind. Until the public demanded it, TMI was not even fortified after 9/11. Only last year, Governor Rendell ordered more security. And this week, the parent company that owns TMI shut down its public information department; alll inquiries will be directed to the headquarters outside Philadelphia. But they will provide a fax machine to the press. We know of a worker (non-nuclear) who saw a blackboard with three options written on it in a meeting room. (this was after the giant bubble problem occurred.) Option #3 was "Blow it (the reactor) up ourselves. Stunning idea--I am grateful that didn't happen. The whole rest of it was freaky Central Pa. was blacked out of the news. I got more news in Connecticut and would call my husband, who I wasn't sure I'd ever see again. (more)

This man, who wants to continue with shunning those without medical coverage, tax the middle class, stay in Iraq for, oh, say, 100 years, is so out of tune with the American people. Who could ever forget McCain's answer to "How many houses do you own?" This response is one for the record books, and will never go away. (more)
